I get excited about the Olympics in general, and of course the U.S. has hosted twice in the last 12 years, but I can't even explain how I felt, watching it happen in China. I was only there for two years so it feels unfair/unpatriotic to say it's like having two home countries (although I am really really really rooting for the U.S. in actual athletic achievement!).
I'm torn. I mean, I watch what incredible technology they're capable of incorporating and then I wonder why it can't be applied to the whole country. I lived a very modern life in Kunming and I know it's changed a lot since I was there, but there are still so many hurdles. Not like technology makes everything better, but I guess I am trying to say that if they can put their best face on for the world, and actually outdo what other countries have done with same opportunity (serving as host country), then why can't they put their best face on for the people who live and work there, who would give their all to make sure China is seen as strong. It made me sad to think of the fact that even though this was impressive and marvelous, that the audience who viewed it on television was still probably only about 60% Chinese. So your average Joe might not be able to see it.
I could be completely wrong. I mean, if the television network is centralized then it might have been on every channel. And much like the World Cup 2002 (when I was still in Asia), store owners and random people could just have TVs out on the streets and passersby might sit down with strangers to watch.
Anyways, I am rambling without a good end point. (Shocker!)
