Kate sighed and ran her fingers through her mussed hair as she walked down the corridor, heading away from the Minister's office after having delivered her report on her most recent assignments. She was a little dissappointed in herself. Four months on assignment in France followed by another eight in Russia, and she had nothing to show for it but a few handfuls of successful raids and a couple of vampire nests she and the rest of her team had managed to clear out. No Death Eaters captured, no "nefarious plans" uncovered -- nothing that Fudge would consider especially useful at this point. Privately, she knew that she hadn't been sent out of the country to find Death Eaters. She knew that Fudge wanted to get her away from the Ministry, away from the other Aurors and officials from the safety and law enforcement divisions. After everything that had happened during the past eighteen months, she knew that Fudge considered her dangerous, that he thought her feelings made her a walking time bomb of sorts.

After twelve long months, the halls of the Ministry of Magic looked almost foreign to her. She still managed to find her way back to her office without any trouble -- or at least, what passed as her office. It was really no more than a small cubicle grouped with several others like it in a brightly-lit room on the fourth floor, an office she shared with several other Aurors, though they seldom saw each other. Their jobs weren't exactly desk-oriented. They stopped in to pick up assignments and drop off reports, occasionally pausing to respond to a letter or summons from one of the higher-ups. There was never much time for talks around the water cooler.

Grimacing, she walked over to her cubicle and sat down in the swivel chair behind her small, crowded desk. "In the country for twelve short hours, and already there's more red tape," she remarked, taking up a recently dated dossier from her desk. She frowned a little as she began to thumb through the paperwork inside. "Happy Christmas to me."
