Rules:
*Grab the book nearest you. Right now.
*Turn to page 56.
*Find the fifth sentence.
*Post that sentence along with these instructions in your LiveJournal.
*Don't dig for your favorite book, the coolest, the most intellectual. Use the CLOSEST.
The closest book, which I am using as a base for my mousepad, has no page numbers, and I'm not about to count out 56 pages for the sake of strict meme compliance. So I used the second-closest book.
...well, I tried to use the second-closest book, but its 56th page has no sentences. It is a full-page illustration. Some people say that a picture is worth a thousand words: I call bullshit.
Third-closest book. Page 56, sentence 5, not counting headings. "The goal statement was developed from researching Web pages of pharmaceutical companies."
What this sentence actually means is: "Her goal statement was based on the goal statements of pharmaceutical companies, found on their Web pages." Trust me. I read the goal statement in question. Even "based on" is probably too vague, although "copied from" is probably inaccurate.
And there you have it. Congratulations, Maira Kalman. Your full-page illustration has prevented The Elements of Style from being used in the meme participation of some random slob on the internet. I hope you're happy. If you aren't happy, I don't know what to tell you. Draw some happy thing and look at it, because that's more than I can do.
