Nobody else bothered, either ;)

In the words of Keynes, "don't start from here"...

My view is that Israel doesn't need to be bound by proportionality. If it could wipe out every rocket operator tomorrow, I'd support it doing so.

The problem is, it can't. It can only attack in such a way that many civilians are killed. It's worth noting that more Israelis have been killed by their own side, since this all started, than have been killed by rocket fire in what, the last 8 years.

The rocket fire should stop immediately. But it's not going to. And Israel's actions are making it less, not more, safe. Israel has certain obligations - legal and moral - towards the civilian population of Gaza. It should start following them. Egypt should open the border, at least more than it is already (and Israel stop bombing it). There should be an immediate ceasefire and a redoubling of efforts to find a peaceful solution.

However, since Hamas came in (a group which was funded by Israel as a counter to the PLO, by the way), the likelihood of a two-state solution in the near future has seemed slim. I don't think there is an adequate answer in the medium term. I do think that everything Israel does should be viewed through the lens of "how do we get to a 2-state solution", though. Nothing else is going to bring it peace.

I'm hoping to go to both places this year, if I get a chance to do so and the fighting winds down.
