fanfare for the common man

Apart from a doctor's visit this morning, I stayed home all day today cleaning my room and watching history in the making. My television was stuck on C-SPAN (not a phrase one hears too often) as I witnessed the US House of Representatives elect a woman Speaker for the first time in its entire history. On top of that, a new Congress with a Democratic majority in both the House and the Senate was sworn in. For the first time in many many years, I actually felt proud of my country.

I was proud to see Nancy Pelosi holding the Speaker's Gavel not only because she's the first woman Speaker, but also because she is the first representative from California to hold that position (and not to mention, a representative from San Francisco on top of that). And I also think she's pretty kick-ass. Apart from Nancy, there were others whom I was happy to see on the House floor today, among them Kathy Castor, my own newly-elected representative from Tampa. Plus Kirsten Gillibrand, the Democrat who I met and campaigned for in upstate New York. And let's not forget the first Muslim and Buddhist representatives. And, on the other side of the building, in the Senate, we now have our first (if unofficially) socialist senator (who is from Vermont, surprise surprise). Yes, there is change in the air in Washington. It's barely anything, really. But, to get away from th things have become, we have to do it in baby steps. Thankfully, they seem to be steps in the right direction.
