Did it take the pain away one drop at a time?
Blood replacing bitter tears that long ago ran dry?
Did 45 years of lonliness run from those tiny cuts,
Cleansing deep, losing the part you never really loved?
Spent 23 years years building something from nothing,
But he's drifting away more every day,
Can't cry anymore, don't really have time,
What good does it do anyway?
But that dull little knife just over there,
Does it make it hurt a little less for now?
Can't just say "Hang in there, it will get better!",
As the months fade away with the years.
But Mama, isn't there something left here,
Something else worth living for?
Surely we're worth it, these children you raised,
The trouble that living can be,
Worth not entertaining the fantasy,
Of letting all the blood flow free one drop at a time,
Blood replacing bitter tears that long ago ran dry.
