The First Stratum: the Emerald Woods
---
"This place seems a lot peaceful...", Phoenix sighed.
He was taking his first few steps as an explorer. The air itself was a lot more crisp than in Etria. In fact, he almost thought he was walking in a place that wasn't tainted by man. Something that nature had full reign on for once.
Though, Maya nodded in agreement, the Armoroad explorers didn't feel that way.
"Don't lose your guard too quickly, sweetie."
Max looked around cautiously. The bright verdant leaves occasionally shook from the bushes. With shake, Max could eye the movements. Regina was no different. Desiree comforted her now tense husband. Phoenix gulped.
That's when jumped a few Treerats.
"Aww! Look at these little buddies!"
"Can you not FABULOUSLY push your defenses so down?! Jeez, it is a little rude!"
Max aimed a Volt Star on one of them, exterminating it immediately.
"Hey! That isn't very..."
Just then, a Treerat pounced on Maya, nipping a piece of flesh right off her cheek. Phoenix's jaw dropped.
"Awww!!", Regina sobbed, "I don't like it when people are hurt... But I'll show you, right?"
And soon, Regina roared, lowing the defenses of the rats.
The Treerat that nipped Maya was hungry for more. But alas, the rat was trounced by Desiree's rifle firing at the savage beast.
"That's for going after my Ronnie..."
Desiree just eyed the dead rodent. Phoenix dropped to his knees.
"What the Hell kind of creatures live here?!"
Max looked back at Phoenix.
"Yggdrassil's beasts. They are more aggressive and territorial than their outside counterparts. Not to worry though..."
Max then took out a skinning knife.
"These bad boys will help out more with the goal to learn the mystery of Yggdrassil for ourselves."
Phoenix almost ran away to hurl. He never wanted to look at the insides of a rat before. The fact the usually more posh and foppish character is doing this kind of work baffled him. He was even more surprised Regina and the DeLites didn't object to this.
"So Nick... You didn't know about how explorers work? Well trust me... The bigger ones get much worse."
This made Phoenix grimace a lot faster.
----
A few hours have passed. Phoenix cleaned himself up as he was wondering how in the world to get back home already. He has grown desensitized to being surprised by monsters in this Labyrinth and then watching Max dissect them after killing them. Soon Phoenix yawned, as if in need for a nap. He never felt this way before. His one gripe though, is that maybe he was feeling his feet aching and his legs tired, and his heart beating rapidly.
"Are you tired, Nicky boy?", Desiree asked.
He nodded.
"I guess every beginner feels that way. Once we get passed Stratum 3, you'd feel less that way, especially since there are some missions I heard that have you never leave the labyrinth for three whole days."
"What?! No way! That's not even fair!!", Phoenix moaned.
"Mia had to do that quest. It was a little painful to sit through.", Maya then reminisced in the stories she heard her sister tell her.
"That is not the point! Look. Can't we all take a break?"
----
"Any sign of them?", Edgeworth asked.
"Nay. They must be still walking the first floor."
"I see... And what of the Fenrir?"
"Sadly it has respawned. Shall we not touch upon them?"
"Yes... Let Fenrir be their first test of competency..."
With that said, they traveled through the pink pole upward to where their home lies. Meanwhile, a familiar set of horns huffs and snorts mist as if anticipating his next kill in the dense forest.
