"Yeah, and lots of that too," Tab replied with a matching smirk. "We should ask them. Or at least ask Tara."
She took his face in her hands and looked at him. "I don't want to leave you, either. That's why I'm having so much trouble with this whole thing. It's not you being jerky."
Luke exhaled heavily and held her gaze, though his own eyes were full of guilt. "It's been eating me up since I realised the enormity of it. I've been trying to back off because I don't want you to think I'm trying to stand in your way and I'm not going to stand in your way. It just... hurts. That what Tara and Lachlan have, what Pat and Aiden are vying for, I want it all with you. Only, I have to accept the fact your a rock star first and foremost. I have to share you with your music. I don't think I ever realised what loneliness was until I knew I was going to have to let you walk away and be amazing."
Tab pressed her forehead against his, and stroked her thumbs up and down his cheeks. "You really think it's any better for me? It hurts me just as much. Every time I think about walking away to be a stupid rock star I want to cry. And you know how hard it is for me to cry in the first place. I feel like my heart's getting ripped in half. One half is ready to follow the music, and the other half wants to stay with you." She wet her lips and tried to stop the lump that was growing rapidly in her throat. "I want it all with you, too. I want to stay here and work as your bar wench and play my regular spots. I want to wake up to you every morning and fall asleep curled up with you every night. I started this thing though and I have to follow it through. I'm going to come back, Luke."
Luke held his hand up. "Just... don't keep saying that," he requested quietly. "You keep saying that when this is all based on things you've wanted your whole life. You don't know that coming back is going to be what you want once you get a taste of all of that. I know my fears aren't unfounded because your own twin feels the same fear, only you'll never really be separated from him because he's your flesh and blood. Me, I just have to rely on hope. Hope that shits me because it feels like I'm hoping you'll fail."
"I don't know what I'm supposed to do then," Tab admitted quietly. "Even if I've wanted this my whole life, it doesn't hold the excitement it should because I want you more. And before you argue with me, I do. You're... you're everything I didn't know I wanted and everything I did know I wanted. I don't want to lose you."
"Just... promise me you'll tell me the minute you realise you want the other life, if you do. Don't make me wait if you know you're not coming back to this," Luke murmured, almost choking up on the words as they came.
She took his face in her hands and looked at him. "I don't want to leave you, either. That's why I'm having so much trouble with this whole thing. It's not you being jerky."
