Rob had managed to gradually pull away from the crowd and hover at the end of the bar for a few minutes. It wasn't that he didn't like Leila's family and friends, it was just overwhemling trying to remember all the names and faces. Plus, there were so many wonderful people here that he almost felt out of his depth. He found himself initially trying to just remain polite and not make any bad impressions, only he was sure he nearly gave one of the dudes a heart attack for calling him 'sir'. It was automatic, and just a habit from the Army. But he was starting to loosen up now, and he was having a great time. If one this was certain. this group knew how to throw a party and the band was fucking amazing. The Scot and the redhead just had it down ( ... )

Despite suspicions, Luke and Andrew hadn't actually been plotting the soldier's demise. They had been trying to nervously figure out which of them should approach him first, figuring if they both went at the same time, they would freak the poor guy out. Of course, they had been observing him, and observing him with Leila. Like Andrew had suspected, the guy seemed nice, and it must have been a big thing for him to rock up to the party soon after he began dating Leila and face the family onslaught.

Andrew was happy to offer the Jackson/Connor olive branch to the guy. It was his birthday and he should be mingling anyway. With Ali safely with Izzy at the bar, Andrew made his way over to Rob, who did look slightly overwhelmed. He smiled and gestured to the bar. "Can I buy you a drink, mate?" he offered.

Rob had been watching the crowd and didn't realise he had company until Andrew spoke. He turned to him with a laugh, trying not to let the nerves engulf him at talking to one of Leila's cousins. "It's your birthday, man. I should be buying you a drink," he pointed out with a laugh. They had been briefly introduced earlier by Leila, but there hadn't been any lingering conversation beyond the initial intros. "Can I buy you one?" he offered.

Andrew shook his head and sat down on the closest stool. "No, I don't drink, mate. I seem to have a constant stream of Diet Coke when I need it, though. Cheers for the offer, though. Are you enjoying yourself? I know this bunch can be quite colourful. I haven't been one of the group for all that long myself, but I wouldn't swap them for anything now."

Rob actually found himself with a refill from the barman without even requesting it. He looked questioningly at the guy, who just smirked at him and walked away. "Jesus, this place is getting tricky on me," he laughed, but left the drink on the bar for the moment. "I am, actually. It's been an awesome party. Your fiancee is quite the clever lass, isn't she? I'm not sure I could pull something like this off. Everyone seems real nice, but I come from a small family, small town. I think it's a bit of a culture shock. Plus, I don't want to be making the wrong impression."

Andrew broke into a wide grin. "She's amazing, isn't she? I don't know how she did it. I had no idea. I'm guilty of actually thinking she forgot my birthday and she had me under a smokescreen the whole time. I should probably be worried about devious she is, but it's one of the reasons I fell in love with her."

He shook his head. "Hey, don't be worrying stuff like that. Us lot have been through a lot of crap. We don't judge. We just want you to feel welcome. I can tell you that you would be hard-pushed to make a bad impression. Don't let looks fool you. They're not as innocent as they look," he laughed. "How are you settling into New York? A small town guy, it must be a culture shock."
