Chapter 2: Nostalgia

A 19-year-old runs down the stairs, out his dormitory, by the fountain across the central garden, and up the high school building.

He stops in front of a second year classroom with quite an effort and yells, “Kaho!”

The whole classroom turn and look at him, and then at Kaho. Luckily it is still homeroom time and class hasn’t started yet.

Chinen doesn’t even bother looking. He knows this is coming, but to bear with the loudness this early in the morning especially after Ryosuke woke him up with the sun, makes him a little upset. Ryosuke, on the other hand, is in deep slumber with his head on the desk, which annoys Chinen even more.

Kaho runs out and pulls him far away from her classroom, blushing at her friends’ laughter.

“What is it, Daiki, that made you so excited that you have to yell in my room? Shouldn’t you still be sleeping normally at this hour?” Kaho said.

“She’s back! Kaiyu’s back!” Daiki said impatiently.

Kaho doesn’t seem surprised, “Yes, and she’s living with me in my dorm.”

“What? So she’s living in Orchid Garden too? And you didn’t tell me?”

“I just got the news yesterday,” she said, “and you’re going to see her back in dorm in the evening anyway even if I didn’t tell you. But now… let’s change it to ‘in a few minutes’, shall we? She’s in the principal’s office right now.”

Daiki sighs, “But still… I can’t believe you didn’t tell me… If it wasn’t Keito who…”

“Okay, now let’s go back, she should be coming up soon. You don’t want to miss her.” Kaho said pushing Daiki back to the direction of her classroom.

The three of them were childhood friends back in primary school. Although Daiki’s older by two years, they hang out together almost every single day, more like families than just friends.

As they approach Kaho’s classroom, they can already see their friend entering the room with Keito and her homeroom teacher. Kaho slips back through the back-side door of the room, but not before Daiki can whispers to her, “we’re having lunch together, the usual place.”

Kaho greets her friend slightly and takes her seat next to Yamada on the last roll. Keito takes his bag off his shoulder and sits two chairs in front of her.

The whole class quiets down after their teacher wrote a name on the blackboard. “She is going to be your new classmate starting today,” directing to the girl standing next to him, “she just moves back from Europe not long ago, so you guys better not bully her.” He said playfully.

“Kamiya, would you introduce yourself?”

She bows deeply and begins, “Good morning, my name is Kamiya Kaiyu. I grew up in Japan and lived in Europe for several years. Nice to meet you.”

“Let’s see…” He looks around in the room, grateful as he spotted an empty seat. “Your seat will be over there, in front of Minazuki.”

Kaiyu smiles at Kaho as she walks toward her seat in front of her friend. Before she takes her seat however, Yamada’s action surprised both her and the whole class.

He suddenly stands up waking up from his slumber and looks at the girl, now standing before him, with an unexplainable expression, ignoring Chinen (who tries to force him back into his chair) and his fellow classmates. After a few seconds of stare, he coldly walks right out the room without a word, leaving the others in complete wonderments.

Kaiyu, feeling incredibly embarrassed, quickly sits down on her chair. “Who is he? Why’d he have to put her in the most awkward situation on the first day… no, not even, on the first minute of class?!…

“In the Middle Ages, Europe is in a state of moral panic. Starting from the 12th century and reached its height around the 16th century, Witch hunt and Vampire hunt became the sole purpose of the society, people were in a state of horror…”

“Hi, you’re Kaiyu right?” Chinen puts up his book on his desk and hides behind it to talk to Kaiyu who sits next to him.

She nods slightly, avoiding the line of sight from their history teacher.

“You smell good.”

“Huh?” Running out of speech, she can’t find any words to respond. A small “thank you” is mouthed.

“Can I ask you a favour?” He continues.

Keito, who sits in front of Kaiyu, gets a feeling of where this question might go and turns back, “Chinen.” whispers loudly.

“Hey, in the back!” The teacher yells. “Save anything after class.”

The two of them return to their tasks immediately, except for Chinen who shows a little resentment before laying back his book flat on the desk.

“Eventually, Church were not the only institute who search and execute suspected magic holders, but the local administrations took action part in it as well. At that time, no matter what your reaction in the inquisition might be, you will be judged as having connections with the devil the moment you are under arrest…”

“We’ll talk later.”

Just then Kaiyu thought she heard a voice inside her head, but when she turns to Chinen, he doesn’t seem to have said anything, I must be imagining thing… she thinks.

“It hasn’t change at all!” Kaiyu runs toward the small pavilion surrounded by medium size shrubs. This is a secret place they often hang out in when they were young, even though that means trespassing to their seniors’ campus. The only possible entrance is through a maze-like shrub garden; rarely anyone is able to find his way here, so naturally it became their own little hiding place.

“I see you haven’t change at all either after you left, still looks like you’re from grade school,” Daiki said sarcastically.

“Hey,” Kaiyu turns back with both hands on her waist, hair carried by the gentle wind as she turns, “I am a real seventeen you know.”

“Yeah, a seventeen with a baby face. We should compare you and your photo from sixth grade, I’m pretty sure they still look the same.” He laughs.

“You’re not really in a position to tease her, Daiki,” Kaho walks pass the now discouraged college freshmen and sits down with Kaiyu in the pavilion. They open up their lunch box as Daiki joins them.

“So how was it in Europe? You haven’t came visit.” Kaho asks.

“Actually, I did a year ago, but I can’t remember why I didn’t stop by…”

“That reminds me, I couldn’t contact you for about a month last year, so you were back in Japan?”

“What?” Daiki looks up as he has his chopsticks in Kaiyu’s bento, “just how many things am I being hidden from?”

“Sorry, Dai-chan.” Kaiyu puts her palms together in front of her forehead, “but I did mean to contact you guys, just a…” A sudden pain rushes to her head.

“What’s wrong?” They ask together.

Kaiyu shakes her head slightly to get rid of the sting, “nothing… but it seems that whenever I try to think of what happened during that time when I was back, my head starts to hurt and I can’t recall much, like broken glass where only bits and pieces will occasionally shine blurrily…

“But it’s nothing I promise.” She said quickly upon her friends’ concerned looks. “So about that guy in our class,” shifting their attention, “who is he?”

“Oh, you mean Yamada Ryosuke?” Kaho replies. “He’s been acting weird lately, always sleeping during classes.”

“Everyone from Rose Garden’s weird, nothing special about that anymore.” Daiki adds.

Kaho chirrups, “but you can’t deny that they’re all very outstanding, both academically and athletically.” Daiki frowns.

“Rose Garden? I haven’t heard of that dorm before.”

“That’s ‘cause it’s far away from our dorms, basically on their own little corner, no one dare to go close since it looks more like a haunted house. You better not go there either, it’s easy to get lost. You know, ''spirited away'?” Daiki states forebodingly.

“Rose Garden…”

“ARIOKA DAIKI~!” Inoo’s voice travels all the way into the garden, making Daiki feels very uncomfortable, “I had a bad feeling about this…”

And he was right, Inoo walks in with a bunch of paper works in hand, “where have you disappeared to? The whole Student Council are busy with the Festival’s preparations, you should get back on your duties too.”

“Oh come on, can’t I take a short break?”

“You can once the Festival’s over,” Inoo said, and his eyes widen afterwards, “Dai-chan… your nose’s bleeding…”

Daiki touches his upper lip amazed, a small amount of blood is felted. “Are you okay?” The girls ask worried.

“Yeah, I’ll… be fine.” As he tries to wipe out the blood.

Inoo hands Daiki a tissue and turns to Kaiyu, “I see you’re Dai-chan’s childhood friend, nice to meet you.”

Kaiyu stands up immediately, “nice to meet you too, my name is Kamiya Kaiyu, you can just call me Kaiyu.” She smiles.

“Inoo Kei.” He said, and then whispers next to her ear with a voice the other two can surely hear, “he’s still the height as the last time you see him right?”

The three giggles while Daiki yells, “Inoo!” This is one of the most sensitive topics for him. Although Kaiyu is smaller and shorter than him given their age, that doesn’t make him feel any better, he has his fellow age group to compare to…

Inoo goes on “you’ll come to the Festival right? What’ll your class do?”

“We haven’t decided yet, I think we’ll discuss it soon in class though.” Kaho answers for her.

“I guess I’ll see you then then, we’re quite busy this few weeks.”

“It’ll be bad if she sees you during Festival, you’re on duty in the infirmary, remember?” Daiki interrupts him.

Inoo smack Daiki in the head, an unnoticed small drop of blood landed on Kaiyu’s handkerchief.

“Now if you’ll excuse us…” He grabs Daiki’s arm and starts walking into the shrubs, “nice meeting you.”

A huge orange sun is about to set at the edge of the western forest. Underneath is a medium size castle-like building, with a tall tower in its right hand region. Surrounded by a whole garden and railings of red roses and sea green spikes, the walls of the building looks rather ancient in comparison to the fresh flowers.

Three boys are sitting at a white table to the side of the front entrance. The oldest of the three is enjoying his cup of drink while the other two are writing in notebooks.

“Err… I don’t get this!” said one of them.

“Be patient, nii-chan, Yuto nii-san’s here to help us.” said the youngest.

“Sorry Yuto, we always bother you when you’re suppose to rest…”

“No problem, I have to thank you two for always visiting me, it’s so boring staying inside all the time.” said Yuto as he puts down his white cup filled with red coloured liquid.

“Yeah! I’m finished.”

“Shintaro, you’re done already?” said his older brother.

“Of course, ‘cause I’m smart.” Shintaro grimaces at the now annoyed Ryutaro, he then turns to Yuto and asks, “what is that you always drink?”

“It’s medicine,” he grins, “you want to try?”

Shintaro leans back immediately, “no thank you, that looks disgusting.”

Yuto shrugs, “too bad,” he inhales deeply, “it’s delicious.”

The brothers exchange eye contact for a second before Ryutaro speaks, “who would use ‘delicious’ to describe medicines?”

“Hmm… me?” He breaths in again, only this time, apart from the smell coming from his cup, he smells another fresh scent pending at the door of his dorm.

He smiles, “Shin-chan, why don’t you go welcome our guest at the entrance?”
