oooh the update

So my sister got into Teach For America. The last two weeks (and for pretty much the rest of the summer) she's been in Houston doing some teacher training. The week before that, she was out in Gallop, New Mexico doing interviews. Sounds awesome, right? Apparently not.

So when she got to New Mexico, they basically said we need you here but don't expect to be liked. We're not your friends, we're not going to invite you to any ceremony or ritual, and don't even think of asking to come. Nice, huh? I mean I can understand them being pissed off at white people in general or whatever, but what a way to be welcome into a community.
In the docs they had my sister read before she came (and it was a LOT of reading), they talked about how poverty manifests itself differently in the classroom at all the different Teach For America locations. My sister, in trying to make conversation, asked one of the people from the Zuni nation how poverty manifests itself there. The guy was like... we don't think of ourselves as poor, we just don't have a lot of things. Oops. I guess that was a horrible social faux paux. Ahhh poor Becca.

Anyways, I don't really have anything to talk about so I thought I'd share my sister's story. I though it was interesting at least... but she is my sister. So things new with me...
um...
I'm working full time at ARL this summer. I've been working on some profiling utilities, kinda preparing for when we start parallelizing everything. Next week I'm going to start working on their build system and porting the main program used for singnal processing over to the main build system (it has its own build system right now). For those who don't know, a build system is a huge utility that automates the process of compiling and linking a program (converting the code written by a programmer to something that a computer can read).

Classes for next semester are
-Automata Theory- Shouldn't be too bad. Logic classes have treated me well and it's a topic I'm interested in, mildly at least.
-Data Mining- This is either going to be amazing or horribly boring. I'm banking on amazing though. At the very least I talked Keith and Kate into taking it with me.
-Web Design- It's not a CS class, it's an STS class that I'm taking as filler... at the bottom it says "Familiarity with keyboard recommended." It should be interesting though... covers html, css, some graphic design stuff. Basically not hard stuff, but stuff worth learning just for fun. I talked James into taking it with me, and Nathan might be on the waitlist (I forget if he actually decided to take it or not).
-Social Psychology- I'm thinking this one should be fun too unless the prof is horrible.

I'm dating Janey (the RA from whitis LLB my freshman [his senior] year). It's really nice dating someone I already know (known him for almost two years now). I know what I'm getting into, I know he's not a complete jerk in disguise (i.e. I know he won't use the line "I'm not even too sure if I ever wanted to be dating you" after daing me for four months *cough*). He even made sure it was ok with Steve (my ex who we're both really good friends with... I spent a lot of time with Steve's bro, Jeff, before Jeff went back to Arkansas and Janey was Jeff's roommate, so it's a close group) before asking me out.

I'm organizing ctf games every two weeks. We meet down on campus on Friday at 8:30p and the games are from 9p-12 with a half hour intermission. The next game is Friday the 23rd.

This summer should be good. A little busy (working full time is time consuming! lol), but good.

Now to go watch the end of SNL and work on a peyote stitch bracelet i'm making....
