feeling cynical

So I was watching this movie in which this amazing guy sweeps a girl off her feet, doing the most romantic things possible, and then once she has completely fallen for him, he dumps her without giving her a reason. She "moves on" and he ends up trying to win her affections back, yet at the first sign of interest, he leaves her hanging while he goes off to someone else. Which leads me to wonder if romance is not only dead, but never really existed. I mean, humans were created with different genitalia so that we can copulate. Nowhere is there a suggestion that we have to create relationships and have romance within them. Romance is meant simply to lure the other person to you, to make you want them and to be with them. Even in the animal kingdom, certain mating rituals are observed to show off the best specimens so the females can pick a mate to breed with. Often, they separate right after and there is little interaction from then on. I'm not sure where the whole concept of romance came from, but I have to wonder why we bother with it. Most guys don't like it, doing it rather grudgingly to attract a potential girlfriend or playmate or to keep them around, to keep them happy. Females wouldn't even need this if we weren't told from birth that finding a romantic husband should be our ultimate priority in life so we can live the "perfect life," then we wouldn't expect it from guys. Maybe guys have it right. They are forced into being romantic to please us, not because they want to, most of the time. So why bother? We females beg our boyfriends to be more romantic, but it's begging for a lie, asking them to create something out of nothing because they have to or else we'll lose interest. Maybe we females need to open our eyes to reality and realize that there are no knights coming to rescue us on their white chargers. There are men around us and what we see is what we get, and maybe that will be good enough. Maybe it's time for us to join the real world and get out head out of the clouds once and for all.
