Back To school

Well, I think I've chosen a school.

Becker College has an accelerated program, it starts april 8th. The last step is financial right now.

But my entrance essay 500 words...

When you are very small, life seems so open. The question ‘what do you want to do when you grow up’ is one that is answered a hundred times a day, out loud and inside your own head. Imagination allows you to entertain every job from Astronaut to Zookeeper. Those who love you best expect you to change your answer every time they ask. It is a tool they use to encourage the imagination, to foster the spirit of exploration within a young heart.

However, as adults we do not have that luxury. The further along your life’s path you travel the further you move away from that freedom of expression and exploration. It is a question that you are expected to answer when you leave high school, a question that is so broad and wide that will define the rest of your life. And if that question remains unanswered, life is suddenly filled with so many uncertainties. Some would even label those who have not made such choices with the term ‘failure’.

I see Becker College’s Pathways program as a way to capture back that exploration. That certainty that was supposed to come with the separation of my adolescence and adulthood. The program appears to be designed in a way that respects the individuality of the students, along with their hectic scheduling and their experience in the working world. I was especially impressed by the portfolio class, and the ability to capture the on-the-job training I have received and transfer it to credits that were well-earned. Many programs I have researched were too focused on speed, or churning out classes that had nothing to do with the core major selected. Becker has succeeded in finding a balance between speed and education, between exploration and guidance.

The Pathways Program will be a way to bring back the learning, education and insight to my life as a professional in the working world.  My current job as a Human Resources Generalist for the Davis companies has become a fostering point of education and experience. Over 75 percent of my 65-person strong corporate office is attending some sort of continuing education program, whether it is a second bachelors degree or a masters degree in their field. My eligibility for their reimbursement program, along with such an educational environment, drives me to find my own place as an academic.  This year, at our corporate meeting, we were challenged to raise that educational number to 100 percent. I am looking forward to taking my name off the list of those who have yet to reach out for education.

Asking a 27 year old ‘what do you want to be when you grow up’ feels almost ludicrous to many adults. But I would maintain that as a 27 years old, I have owned my own retail store. I have become a mother. I have started a new career. I have gotten married. But to this day, I still do not know what I want to be when I grow up. And I hope that Becker is the  place where I will find that answer.

Right.

Ciao
