Question Prompt: Where did you grow up?
Spiral Castle is no place for a child - endless hallways to get lost in, sharp jagged stones ready to open cuts in knees and palms when games become overeager, small, running feet too quick. And Achren is no mother for a little girl, cold and cruel and self absorbed.
But, for whatever reason, Eilonwy grows up happy. The castle itself seems a world for her alone, full of exciting secrets. She learns the passageways better than anyone else, even Achren, and within the small, dark corridors she is safe, in perfect control. She imagines living forever in them, like some sort of magic creature, coming out to perform small, harmless tricks on before vanishing back into her parallel universe, leaving mundane, earthbound people baffled. She loves Spiral Castle, at least when she is young, before the walls begin to close in on her.
She loves Achren, too, try as she might to ignore that fact when the sorceress-queen is her sworn enemy. She was so regal, so beautiful, that Eilonwy couldn’t help but see her the highest being in all the universe, the one most deserving of respect.
And Achren sings to Eilonwy as Eilonwy is trying to fall asleep, too, odd, exotic songs with words that sound like magic and which make the blood within her veins, the royal blood, want to sing in reply. When she felt that, Eilonwy could imagine sitting at Achren’s side one day, as regal as she, a circlet on her red-gold hair. She could imagine having a daughter, or a niece, and singing those same songs to her, telling her of her ancestors and of her great destiny.
Perhaps it was a good place for her to grow up, after all. She grows up having a place in the world, and isn’t that all that matters, at the beginning?
