30 Days of Television: Day 2
A show that you wish more people were watching: Oban Star-Racers
I'm skewing this a little to be "a show that more people should watch" because it isn't airing now (it wasn't canceled, it was only meant to be a story contained in about 26 episodes).
Oban Star-Racers might just be THE single most underrated show I've ever seen in my entire life. It's about a teenage girl named Eva who runs away from boarding school to find her estranged father and winds up taking on an assumed name and becoming the Earth pilot in an intergalactic racing tournament. Also, it's an anime collaboration between Japan and FRANCE, which for some reason is just awesome on its own.
The racing sequences in this show are nothing short of stunning, full of dramatic pacing, inventive ship designs, exceptionally fluid animation, and the added plot bonus of the Earth team losing races almost as many times as they win, making them much more realistic underdogs. The main characters are well-developed and the plot keeps getting gradually darker with more and more backstory, such as the details behind Eva's father's abandonment (from his point of view, which makes it even more heartbreaking) and the truth about her mother's death. For a kid's show, even an action-y one, the ending is notably bittersweet, although I was just a tad disappointed that the huge epic interplanetary war they were building up to never happened. Still, I let it slide after a while because I was so impressed with everything they did so right in this show.
Unlike Higher Ground, Oban Star-Racers actually got a DVD release and is relatively short, so I highly recommend getting it a watch.
Also, did I mention music by Yoko freaking Kano and Taku freaking Iwasaki? Why no, I don't believe I did.
