In Which Rune and Emmy Explore

Nov 11, 2009 17:59

Emeraude sat on the edge of the plaza fountain, toes barely touching the ground beneath her; she was waiting for someone, that much was obvious. The happy little tune she hummed to herself was indicative of a good mood, something that had likely been seen only on a one-on-one basis with the girl ( Read more... )

Rune all but hurtled around the corner, arms held out to her sides as she made chirping, whistley noises. She was trying to imitate one of the giant birds from her home. Unfortunately for her, the birds were graceful, and she... well, she wasn't. Her foot hit a loose cobblestone, and the girl went tumbling end over end, until she rolled to a dizzy stop at Emmy's feet.

"Oofa..."

"Goodness me. You really do know how to make quite the entrance, don't you?" Emeraude laughed quietly, covering her mouth with one hand, "The second time we've met and the second time you've tumbled to my feet. Really, do you spend any time on your feet?" She teased, hopping off the edge of the fountain to help Rune up, dusting her off and making sure she was alright.

"I do hope you're not hurt," the blonde told the young girl. "We're going to be doing a lot of wandering today, I expect."

"I'm okay!" she replied, shaking her head to clear the dizziness. "I was being a shirke! But they land a lot better than I do."

Not that she seemed to mind much, Rune was nothing if not able to easily bounce back from almost anything.

"Shirke?" She asked, pressing a thoughtful finger to her lower lip. "Well, at any rate, I'm glad to hear it. What have you seen thus far?" Emmy smiled. Oh, to be young again.

"It's a beautiful bird, tho really really rare," Rune replied. "I've only seen pictures, but it's all rainbow colored. No one really knows anything about them, but they're so rare that if you kill one you get into really big trouble."

Which was how her parents had explained it. Who in their right mind was going to tell a fluttery girl like her that shirke-hunters were drawn and quartered, and anyone who dealt with them lost body parts.

"I showed mister Justice the Library, and I've seen mister Shinju's apartment," she paused. "But I was really tired and slept for a long while. I made it back pastry place mister Kresnik showed me for food though!"

And had actually exercised some sense in only eating a few sweets, and then having some milk.

Emeraude looked rather fascinated by talk of this beautiful bird. It sounded absolutely wonderful, she thought to herself. The fact that those who hunted them were in 'big trouble', something Emmy equated with probable death, just made it even more fascinating.

"Alright, you've seen the main high points, then." She nodded, "This is the plaza, as I'm sure you've gathered. There's a number of shoppes around here specifically - a pleasant little cafe that I enjoy my mornings in, a restaurant or two, clothing shoppes and the like..." The blonde ticked the things off on her fingers before looking up at Rune again. "What do you think you'd be most interested in?"

"Book!" she responded instantly. "But... the shades in the library are creepy.... I'd rather get books from shops anyways, cause then I can make notes in them, and don't have to worry as much."

And clothes were just... eh. She'd never had that much money for the fancy things, and was quite happy with what she had.

"Book, indeed," Emmy laughed. "I'm sure we can find a bookstore around here, in that case. I'd like to collect some as well. The last time I bought a book...I think Shinju kept it actually. Or maybe it's somewhere in my apartment." Another laugh, as she stretched upwards. There was probably a bookstore somewhere closer to the more residential areas; she nodded in that direction.

"Shall we try this way first? I think I recall a shop of the like this way."

"Mister Shinju kept your book?" Rune asked. "Maybe he wanted you to read it to him! He seemed interested in some of my stories too."

She nodded at Emmy's suggestion, eager to get exploring. She'd never been too far beyond her section of Nular, even when on the run, so she was looking forward to seeing just how big this place was, and what it had.

"Well, it was both our book; we bought it so we could read it together," she smiled fondly at the memory. "I can't recall if we ever finished it, though. It was for one of our first dates together."

Emeraude started off in the direction she hoped it was in, making sure Rune wasn't too far behind. They'd probably explore the majority of the City - the occupied parts, at least; Emmy still didn't know what was in the East - in the duration of the day, just to see where everything was, and what was new. It had been a while since she explored, after all.

"Oooohh. The two of you are," what was the polite way of saying it? Her mother had told her before... "a couple? That must be nice!"

She trotted to keep up with the taller female, but keep up she did.

"Yes, that's right!" She beamed proudly as Rune caught up to her; she slowed somewhat to keep from walking too far ahead. "We've been together for a while now," Emmy smiled. "He's lovely, isn't he?"

They seemed to be getting into an area filled with more shoppes, including the lingerie store she'd been told about a few times now. She made a note to check it out later, when Rune wasn't with her, then continued scanning the area for a proper bookstore.

"He's really nice," Rune agreed. "He's like my big brother back at home. Well, mostly."

Her big brother wasn't a vision master, just the head of a nobleman's guard. Which was impressive enough, considering their shopkeepers background. And if there were any other implications--doubtful--Rune missed them entirely, by virtue of still considering boys to have 'cooties.' Most of them, anyways.

"Well, I'm glad to hear that. Those of us who've been here for a long time always like to make the new ones feel welcome," she smiled brightly. They walked past another large building, and Emmy finally stopped, clapping her hands together.

"Oh! It looks like this one is a bookstore!" She said excitedly, looking to Rune. "Shall we take a look?"

On the one hand, Rune hoped to someday give comfort like they had given her comfort. On the other hand, that would mean being trapped here for a while, and she didn't really like that idea.

"Yeah!"

Rune darted towards the store, pressing her nose against the glass. An avid window shopper, she knew just how to stare at things through a window without getting into trouble with the shopkeepers themselves.

Though it didn't look like there was anyone in there. Well, she was limited by what she could carry, and she didn't have a holding bag. So she would browse today, and come back later.

Emeraude followed her to the window, peering in as well. The Shades never seemed to care if they looked in without buying. "I don't think the Shades will mind if we go in," she laughed quietly, gesturing towards the door. She was interested in getting a novel or two, as well. Who knew how much time she would have on her hands now.
