(this assignment was to write something about returning to school)

The idea of communal living always seemed appealing until I was actually faced with the alarming prospect of having someone else lay their hands on my most prized possessions; in other words, everything I own. I relished tracing myself back to my parents’ 1960s Berkley-era hippie roots, and thus influenced, considered myself a perfect candidate for the college version of life on a commune. However, in my desire to live out my romanticized hippie fantasies I forgot two very influential factors in my life. First, my parents might have lived in Berkley in the 1960s, but they were not exactly model hippie citizens. Second, I am an only child, and therefore, have never technically had to share much of anything. There is nothing more disconcerting than eagerly opening your clothes drawer to grab your favorite shirt and find that it has simply vanished, or finding that the movie you are planning on watching that night has inexplicably gone missing. One would think that after three full years on the college commune I would have gotten used to endlessly wondering where exactly my belongings are. Nevertheless, I still cringe at the sight of my unwashed dishes, dirtied by someone else, probably with my food, waiting patiently for me to wash them.
