Misc. Gronk and the Horrible Story of the Dead Bird!

Spent mad money at the Scarlet Garden last weekend. I bought a black satin bustle skirt, an absinthe-green cincher (flimsy Catherine Coatney, but I'm already getting one new custom corset, can't afford two), a frilly black blouse and a t-shirt (black, natch) with a green Deco lady on it. All but the last will make their debuts at Convergence. ( Read more... )

I'm looking forward to Convergence in general, but have been making a point not to look too closely or let myself get too excited about any particular planned events. I knew as soon as i saw the bid that this is a bunch of kids who don't know Portland, aren't really our peeps, and are making a heap of uninformed fibs because they have the absurd idea that this could be a money-making venture for them. I feel for the actual Portland scene-makers who've been roped into helping because they want to keep this from becoming the train wreck that ruins their home's reputation.

I'm going because i think this will be like an old-fashioned house party where a heap of us get to stay in the same big manor house together and play dress-up. From the little bits of time i've gotten to spend in Portland and the people i've met from there, i consider it to be a delightful little city just the right distance away for a restorative road trip. In my eyes, there's no way next weekend could possibly not be a blast. At very worst, every single event the Committee has planned gets canceled at the last minute, and then we could all go clubbing together, spend an afternoon in Powell's, have big picnics, and generally enjoy each other's company in a place that's just different enough to be novel.

Yes, thinking of this as a house party would probably be the best way to manage the uncertainty and annoyance. It's just difficult for me because people I like are really hurting, and I can't stand that, plus I am supposed to be modelling, and I hate having my commitments up in the air. It's particularly challenging with darling Baby in the mix.

There won't be much clubbing for me, but I am all for picnics and Powell's--oh, and cheese! I'm down for cheese. I am glad that you are coming down. It'll be delightful to meet you in person, provided the fabric of space/time is unaffected by our proximity.

(By the bye, I'm glad you liked the Po'Lentils. I surprised myself when I came up with the dish. I was all ready to squeeze in some lemon, as I always do when I make lentils, but when I tasted it, I found that the garlic and mustard added enough sharpness on their own. Mustard does have a lot of vinegar in it, though, so it makes sense. Oh, and I LOVE "pickling at midnight"! It's perfect! I've spent so many nights pickling, or gluing walnut halves together, or similar fiddly things. Major tendency to overcommit, esp. with crafty projects. You should see my house around the winter holidays.)

How awesome would it be if we could alter the space-time continuum? That's so much more exciting than anything someone else's bad planning could ruin.

I've been taking some cold comfort in the fact that i've had plenty of free time to for like the cheese festival and sticking more feathers onto tiny hats precisely because Seattle didn't win the bid for this Convergence. No matter how any of the official or unofficial events go this weekend, i need to remember that i have the luxury to enjoy it because i'm not too terribly over-committed with event planning and damage control to properly feed myself. It's a bit difficult to look at it from such a selfish perspective when i know how hard some good people have worked to turn this into a fun party after all, and to show your lovely city's best face as well as they can. It would be more difficult to ignore the opportunities to have a nice weekend with a bunch of people i'll be happy to see there no matter what is or is not planned.
