Yesterday I had my first taste of life. It happened on the outskirts of
The Square, beneath red scaffolding and next to some Italian cafe.
Yesterday, I walked into a comic book store.
Before then, I'd only really thought that shops like this only existed
in America and Japan. It was the first time I'd ever seen one, and boy,
am I glad it's not true.
Everywhere I looked there were shelves and shelves lined with an
unimaginable number of books, or rather, comics. Settled in the centre
of the room was a squared glass display case filled with the
untouchable stuff. Limited Edition action figures and the thickest
collection of graphic novels I've ever seen; not that I've seen many.
This glass case made a sort of square border so there was a space in
the middle. And sat there, chewing away, was your typical Seth Green
lookalike comic book guy. Only thing missing was the few hundred pounds
of fat sagging from his waistband.
But what I was really interested
in, was living quietly in the dark recesses of a dusty corner, sitting
in three bookcases and a spinnable display shelf.
Manga.
Now, some of you who are reading this won't know about my obscene
obsession with all things Japan related. Especially Manga and Anime. It
began around the beginning of 2005 and slowly grew into a shaggy,
big-eyed, Sailor Moon costume wearing beast. Bare in mind, I don't
watch Sailor Moon, tis only because that costume is mostly know from
that show. And so now, in my academic building, I'm part of a private
Anime Scavengers Club. It consists of three year eight students,
including myself, from three out of four forms in our year [all #15 in
the register, weirdly], and a year eleven student [#5 in the
register...but y'know.. three years age difference so 3x5=15..wahey!].
Thanks to my willing-to-download cousin, who has the patience to
actually wait for them to download, I hold the title of
most-animes-watched in our little club. It means that the other three
members are begging on their knees for us to burn some for them.
Bribary is a wonderous thing.
So now that you know the history of my obsession, I think you'd
understand when I had to bite my lip to keep from screaming and
rattling on and on about all the manga they had. I could've lived there
and been happy for the rest of my life.
Just to name a few that I recognised, in case any of you know them too:
Initial D Volumes 1-19
Love Hina [Complete]
Akira
Mahou Sensei Negima
And I think these deserve extra special mentioning:
Cowboy Bebop [YEEAAAHH! Ultimate cool. "The work which will become a new genre in itself will be called Cowboy Bebop." Oh how right you are.]
Gravitaton [I
was utterly surprised when I saw this covering a good three quarters of
one shelf. Didn't think it was okay or acceptable in England to have
these]
FAKE [The same with this as witch Gravitation. Totally shocked.]
And now, I can no longer turn off
centering, so I shall conclude here. Also, must zoom off to cousin's
house to see his ultra cool, ultra new keyboard. Many happenings filled
that day, but I'll leave those to tell at a later date, possibly
tomorrow.
So bye bye, all of you who have even stopped to read this.
