Character: Belphegor.
Timeline: After the Inheritance Trials, once retrieving Mammon.
Personality: Belphegor has several unique, abnormal, and unbalanced quirks that make him tick and tock. He's a prince, and won't let anyone forget it--even referring to himself as one or using the phrase '--because I'm a prince'. As such, Belphegor believes he should be treated as one and thinks highly of himself and his abilities. What he wants, he deserves to get and own. He's under the idea that he's superior and that every else is 'normal' or mere 'commoners'. However, he regards his boss as a king, and is willing to stick around the Varia despite the harsh treatments from Xanxus. Because of his royalty and his actions leading him up to where he is, Belphegor has a huge superiority complex that stems from his own blood--he has royal blood, so he's higher than everyone. It's his excuse and reason for his actions and procedures. In his belief, he's a prince, so he should be able to do this and that and whatever.
Characterized as the sin of 'Sloth', Belphegor takes on the term 'laziness' as a sort of disregard for the importance of others. (Because, of course, he's a prince and should only look up to those deserving of his loyalty.) Sloth could also be seen as doing nothing or doing only trivial matters--to want to take it easy. Because Belphegor is of royal blood and a prince, he doesn't want to be told what to do by those lesser than him, and acts out on his own. While he may not want to take it easy so much, Belphegor does what he wants and no ones going to get between him and his fun. (Unless, of course, it's Xanxus or Vongola orders.)
He can be childish, bratty, and even innocent to a point, often teasing and playing around with his friends, family, and enemies. Everything is like a game to him, yet he won't hesitate to get serious (in his own way) when it comes down to it. He has a lot of pride and isn't above getting hurt or dying to win his battles or stubbornly to prove his point. Belphegor can be seen acting as a eight-year old spoiled prince, because, in a way, he's still stuck in that same mind he had when he was eight. He never really had to grow up while in the Varia. All that was required of him for the Varia were his skills in a fight and his tactics on the battle field.
Mischievous and destructive, Belphegor isn't one to live a boring life. If he's not having fun, he finds different ways and ideas to make him interested. He'll toss knives at his comrades, deceit people (save for the Varia), or even kill an opponent when the game has gone boring--as long as he entertained and gets a good laugh from it, it's all good fun for the prince. He doesn't believe in being bored, because, obviously, he's a prince and even a simple game could be fun. Of course, those games never really turn out well for the one against him. However, his actions can change from his childish behavior to a more repulsive demeanor. Belphegor is fascinated in morbid and macabre. It's pure fun entertainment for the prince--he gets excited from bloodshed and pain. He threatens people for fun, and greatly enjoys their reactions to his deeds.
From torturing his victims to even 'squishing them like cockroaches', Belphegor is considered sadistic and a sociopath. Death, agony--it's all fun amusement to him. He's excited to see people hurt, and even more amused to when they're strong enough to play by his rules. If they can handle his teasing and playful activities, than all the more fun for him. However, if the game is becoming sour and uninteresting, he isn't above killing them off quickly before moving onto something fun. Comrades, enemies, or rivals strike up his interest quicker and longer, especially if he has some dirt on them for being strong. He doesn't mind a rough game.
As such, if Bel is shown his blood in any way or knows that he's bleeding, his mind shifts to becoming more psychotic and dangerous. The reason being, he's reminded of how he killed his brother and the mere sight of his blood is that of 'royal blood' or just like his twin's own blood. When in this demented state of mind, Belphegor's actions are more crucial and deadly. He still enjoys a game of cat and mouse, but he wants to cut up his opponents more. He wants his victims in pain, wants to torture them, wants to see fear.
Despite all these dark and threatening qualities, Belphegor is actually quite the genius and considered as Varia's best tactician. He plans things carefully, comes up with intelligent plans and ideas, and uses the battlefield to his advantage. He doesn't argue back much when his genius is in question, due to his more sloth personality. Even still, it's a fact that Belphegor is Varia's number one tactician, and he didn't get it without working for it. He holds the title 'Prince the Ripper' with pride, and won't let anyone forget it. It was also shown in an interview, how quick he was to answer a mathmatical problem. Of course, the answer had been 4444 or 'shishishishi'--his trademark laugh.
When it comes down to any form of love or romance, Belphegor hasn't shown an interest to it. However, on occassions, he does show childish forms of affections. He can be seen holding the Arcobaleno Viper (Mammon) and using him as a sort of stuffed toy. Not only that, he forces Fran, Mammon's replacement in the future, to wear a frog hat to remind him of Mammon. (And tells Fran to not remove it even when Fran informs him he couldn't open his box weapon unless he removes the hat.) However, Mammon nor the Varia for that matter, are spared from his teasing actions. But, to Belphegor, the Varia have won his respect and he's closer to them than his own family, who he has claimed to have killed.
Background: Born as a prince to an unknown country, Belphegor was the younger born from a set of twins. It could be observed that while Belphegor possibly got all he wanted (being a prince and all), he was still jealous of his brother's older position. Not to mention that it was his older brother who constantly won their scuffles. Jealousy, envy -- they looked alike, but it was Belphegor who was 'second' and Rasiel who was superior. Growing up with that, their relationship became more rough and complicated. Belphegor often lost fights and battles with his brother, which only caused Belphegor to want to succeed and beat his twin more. Eventually, their petty bickering's and shoving escalated to complete all out fist fights, hair pulling -- rough housing, basically. But even then, it continued to rise to the two of them tossing and throwing small rocks, to chucking larger rocks when the smaller ones proved useless. And, finally, tossing knives came into the picture.
On the morning before one of their fights, Belphegor came up with a plan to get his brother drugged. He placed laxatives into his older brother's tea before another challenge between the two started. With his brother incapable of fighting normally, it was easy for Belphegor to murder his twin and bury him. And even when asked about his deed, Belphegor would reply that he mistook his brother as a cockroach. With his brother dead, Belphegor claimed to have killed the rest of his family and left his kingdom. (Or by Fran's intuition, he was chased out.)
But, from seeing his brother killed by his own hands, Belphegor achieved a supreme and untamed happiness. As such, even when seeing his own blood -- royal blood -- Belphegor remembers the excitement of how he had murdered his twin brother. He gets into a fit of rage and the true form of 'Prince the Ripper' comes out.
Shortly after the murder of his twin and family, Belphegor comes across the mafia -- more specifically, the Varia. At age eight, the only thing going for Belphegor was his genius mind. Because killing has become a new joyful hobby for the prince and with no where else to use his incomparable battle sense, Belphegor voluntarily joins the elite assassin group. However, shortly after, Xanxus (Varia's leader), started a coup d'état against Vongola's leader. It isn't clear if Belphegor actually participated, due to his young age and body structure, but he could have helped with planning out battle plans and ideas.
Whether he did or not, Belphegor would have to wait with Squalo while Xanxus was imprisoned inside a block of ice for eight years. Around this time, it can be concluded that Lussuria and Mammon joined the Varia (Levi was recruited by Xanxus -- according to Leviathan's flashback). During the time that Xanxus is frozen, Belphegor grew more accustomed to the mafia, as well as working on new techniques himself. I'm assuming they still had to follow Vongola's orders, so Belphegor took on missions along with the others.
But once eight years had passed and Xanxus imprisonment thawed out and Leviathan recruited, the core members began the task of striking back in a vengeance. Due to the Vongola rings begin passed down by a successor picked from the head of the Vongola family, it was a problem when the outside advisor chose a different successor. In the case that this does happen, the rings are split into two and they're given to the chosen applicants and have to face off with their rivals. In this problematic situation, Vongola's boss chose his son, Xanxus, while the outside advisor chose his own son, Tsuna.
Belphegor waited at the Varia hideout when Xanxus instructed Squalo to retrieve the other set of rings. And upon Squalo's reappearance with the rings and finding they were fake, Belphegor when along with the rest of the top Varia members to retrieve the real rings so they could become the chosen guardians while their leader would be the new boss of Vongola. Coming to Japan, Belphegor appears in front of Tsuna and the other chosen ring holders just as Leviathan was about to attack Lambo for his possession of the ring. It becomes even more complex when Xanxus steps in and the agreement to a battle is tossed into the mix, for the guardians to face off against their rivals. As such, Belphegor was to take on his own opponent for the ring of storm -- Hayato Gokudera.
For the first two battles, Belphegor observes and watches in interest. Of course, this only makes him become more anxious when it's his turn to fight.
Belphegor faces off finally against Gokudera on the third floor of the school, with strong wind turbines that would go off at random in the hallway. Not only that, but they would detonate after fifteen minutes. Before the battle begins, Belphegor slyly places a needle on Gokudera's shoulder -- claiming how stiff he is. The needle is poisoned to numb the shoulder, so Gokudera doesn't at all know that Belphegor had attached a wire to him.
Once the battle begins, Belphegor shows off his techniques with knives -- completely catching his opponent and the others (Vongola) off guard. He tricks them into believing he's using the wind currents by means of attack Gokudera, when, in fact, he was using the wire he attached to Gokudera's shoulder. Eventually, however, Gokudera is able to figure out the technique and attacks back.
Upon Gokudera using his new technique, Rocket Bombs, Belphegor is hit by the explosion. However, this only shows Prince the Ripper's true form. With his blood, the royal blood of his family, spilling out, Belphegor begins an attack that has more of a deadly aim and less play. Eventually, he traps Gokudera with razor sharp wire -- though it backfires when Gokudera had planted gun powder all around the room. Half dead, if not more, Belphegor lays unconscious once the room had exploded. But, much to Gokudera's surprise as he tries to grab the ring, Belphegor wakes up and refuses to hand it over.
The two scuffle and fight while the air turbines began to explode, only a matter of seconds before the one in their room would do so as well. Eventually, Gokudera gives up while Belphegor is caught in the explosion with the ring. Miraculously, he still lives with Gola Mosca carrying him out.
Belphegor is next seen bandaged up while using a crutch to walk, back to observing battles again. It isn't until the Sky Battle that he participates in a fight once more. Because of the rules for the fight, Belphegor is given a poison that makes him immobile. However, thanks to Xanxus' help, he's given the antidote to overcome the poison. Belphegor sets off to help the others in the Varia.
He faces off against Hibari first, showing off his more deadly technique with knives called 'Cutting Knives Waltz'. And after hurting Hibari, Belphegor takes off in order to complete the mission of getting the rest of the core members and rings back. He, along with Mammon, hold Chrome as a hostage and demand the Mist, Rain, and Storm ring. The Sun ring becomes theirs soon enough, and they obtain the Thunder ring from Lambo.
And once Xanxus is frozen again, this time by Tsuna, Belphegor and Mammon use the rings to quickly release him from the prison. However, after putting the ring on Xanxus' finger, it's discovered he isn't really the Ninth's son and the ring rejects him. Leaving only Belphegor and Mammon standing, the prince gets ready to attack the Vongola with members of the Varia to act as backup. However, things took a turn for the worst for the Varia when the reinforcements they had are taken care of by Lancia.
Being out numbered now, Belphegor gives in and surrenders, along with Mammon.
It's hazy over what exactly happens next, but the Varia are seen a few times again--Belphegor of which partners with Mammon for the Arcobaleno Trials. With the use of Mammon's powers, Belphegor is disguised as a girl transfer student named Himeko Hariyama. While Mammon is performing the trial, Belphegor uses the disguise to hang around with Kyoko -- while Mammon uses the idea that he has Kyoko hostage.
Once the battle is over, Belphegor brings Kyoko up to the shrine where Mammon gave his trial. His disguise is given up as he releases his trademark snicker. Belphegor and Mammon are next seen at Yamatoto's dad's sushi restaurant.
Belphegor gives one last appearance to retrieve Mammon with Squalo during the Inheritance Trials. They don't stay long before leaving and, presumingly, heading back to Italy.
Abilities/Additional Notes: As mentioned before, Belphegor is a genius and a great tactician. He plans out ways to take down his enemies on the battle field and observes opponents--even when he's not fighting them. His weapons of choice are knives and razor-sharp wire. He enjoys a good game of cat and mouse, so he keeps his enemies alive until landing a final blow. Not only that, but when when cut or he knows he's bleeding, Belphegor will go into a rage where the true form of 'Prince the Ripper' shows. He'll fight like he's playing a game, but his attacks are more deadly and ruthless.
He has a particular technique called 'Cutting Knives Waltz'. This is considered his most deadly attack (before the future arc). He decorates the battlefield with his knives and wire, distracting his enemies, really, with the knives -- as the wire is nearly invisible to the human eye. Then, once the stage is set up, he uses more knives to connect to the wire and surround his opponent. He then attacks his enemy all at once with one final blow.
Sample Journal Post: Video;;
[For a moment, as the video feed starts, only a mischevious grin can be shown before the device is pulled back a little. A blond with hair covering his eyes and crown on his head laughs.]
Ushishishi~! Who has the guts to place the prince in such a torn place? It's rude to kidnap a prince, especially one who can tear your eyes out. If I don't get an answer now, you'll only regret it later.
[If one looked closely, they could very well see a knife in the so called prince's other hand. And if with a deeper and closer look, one could also see blood on the blade. But as quick as it can be seen, it just as quick leaves as the boy turns a little away.]
If you insist on hiding, the prince will come and find you. Hide and seek is my favorite!
[He laughs again, his grin, if possible, growing even wider.]
But you'll live to regret what you've done when I find you. Or maybe not~ I don't plan on letting you live once I end this game of hide and seek.
[After another dangerous smile, the video feed is cut off.]
Sample RP: It looked dark and dangerous all around him. But, truly, the prince could care less as he gazed beyond the strands of his hair. He was careful not to trip or step on anything that was sharp or sticking at an edge; didn't want to risk getting hurt so early in this new game. If it could be called as such. When he had awaken to the surrounding around him, the prince half thought that boss might be tricking them with a new training exercise or perhaps a punishment for taking too long with returning Mammon back to Italy. Eventually, he agreed to just go with what awaited for him.
The scenery was too dreary for his personal tastes; he was a prince after all. But, something about the cracked and broken buildings and ruined streets were quite interesting. Hands stuffing into his jacket, the prince, Belphegor, felt his fingers brush over the small communication device he had awoken with. Like a child with a new toy, he had examined and played with the item--but Belphegor hadn't made a post on it. He wanted to explore a little more before demanding answers to his questions. That and, if this was a test or punishment by boss, he wanted to do it without asking for assistance.
He had noticed few people walking about, talking in a hush whisper. Another thought came to mind to threaten them for answers, but Belphegor was almost enjoying this. It was like a game to him; he was a cat trying to find it's mouse. But, what mouse was he looking for? That question in his mind only made this game seem even more intriguing and fun.
The blond haired prince only made it another few more steps before he heard the device in his pocket give off a small 'ping!'. Out of curiosity, he silently read the message. It made little to no sense. Belphegor decided to ignore it. He had to concentrate on this sudden new situation he was put into. Whether it was boss' fault or not, he wanted to find the answers out himself before asking. After his fun was spoiled by boredom, of course. Pocketing the device into his jacket again, Belphegor returned to the task of exploring.
A Cheshire-like smile had formed on his lips when he made a turn down an alleyway. His other hand slyly wrapped around a set of knives. Just in case. A thought of his boss or a new threat standing around the corner interested him. He knew he couldn't take down the boss, but it could prove to be exciting before his head was met with a bullet. And if it was a new threat..Well, they wouldn't last long. He was a prince after all--not too much got in his way. At least, that's what the prince believed anyway.
He ducked his head low, listening for any sounds out of the ordinary. Even in the damp, dark alley, Belphegor noticed glass scattered around the ground. Possibly from a broken window. Being careful not to step on any, Belphegor could silently hear a few voices up ahead. The alley only appeared to get darker; not that the ever so changing sky helped. He crept further and further towards the noises, finally noticing a small, dim light just around the corner to a connecting alley. However, as he did get closer, his boots were easy to hear along the cracked ground. The voices became hushed until finally silent. And soon the prince could hear movements and hurried footsteps leaving the scene.
Still curious, Belphegor came to the corner. He was already pulling out a knife. You could never be too sure over what was around the corner. But, as unlucky as it was for the prince. no one was around. There was a liter of bottles and butts of cigarettes over the ground, a flickering light on a tilted trashcan. Belphegor ducked down, stepping over a semi-lit end of a cigarette. "Ushishishi~ Ran away like scared mice." The prince's grin didn't waver as he shifted his hands into his pockets again. Slowly, he pulled out that small device, fingers hovering over the touch-screen.
"This game has lost the prince's interest."
