This is the story so far...

There's a lot of net traffic about the release of the Lockerbie Bomber(tm), but in my view the interesting thing is how the media on the whole has missed the fact that the SNP did something to appease the Americans but it was skipped over. [With the exception of Newsnight]

Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi was forced by some under the table deal to drop his appeal. It has been widely reported, (and probably just regurgitaed from the Scottish Govt press release without fact checking), that the appeal had to be dropped to allow the release to happen. This is a lie. In Scottish Law the appeal can even continue after the defendant's death.

So a terminally ill man was told drop the appeal and we ship you home. He now has to carry that verdict to his grave. Article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights was denied to a man who to myself and many, many others see as a scapegoat for a murderous act that was never properly investigated.

"Our aim is to campaign for Mr Megrahi’s release from prison so that he can continue the treatment for his terminal illness whilst awaiting his appeal.

His application for bail to the Appeal Court was unsuccessful, despite the fact that the judges said he did not pose a flight risk, but the Scottish Government does have the power to release Mr Megrahi on compassionate grounds and can impose the same conditions set out by the Crown when they opposed his bail application.

We believe, in purely compassionate terms, that Mr Megrahi should be released allowing him to spend time with his family.

Any prisoner diagnosed with a terminal illness would be under enormous stress. In Mr Megrahi’s case the stress is multiplied, as he maintains his innocence and he is thousands of miles from his own country and culture

Although there is no evidence that stress caused Mr Megrahi’s cancer there have been many studies demonstrating that stress is a major factor in the effective treatment.

JFM will not interfere with or comment upon the legal issues relating to Mr Megrahi’s appeal. Rightly so, these are matters for Mr Megrahi’s legal team and ultimately their Lordships in the Court of appeal.

Father Pat Keegans has now officially joined the Justice for Megrahi Committee and is warmly welcomed by all.

Fr. Pat Keegans was parish priest of Lockerbie at the time of the disaster; he experienced the explosion first hand and was almost killed. He was heavily involved in the aftermath and continues to have close relationships with the families of the victims and has always been interested in the political and legal issues.
