rainy days with the gang
so i was at sophie's house yesterday with the gang and we were just sitting around the fireplace, warming ourselves as it was raining pretty hard out. billie had a cup full of marshmallows with about a teaspoon of hot chocolate in it. suddenly, billie cried:
"sophie! blanket!"
it's this tradition they have where, instead of billie warming sophie, sophie warms billie. so he came over and sat in sophie's lap and she wrapped her arms around him.
"sophie!" he whined, "you have to sing, remember?"
"well...yeah, i remember. the last time we did this was like ten minutes ago."
and, softly, she started singing him "comin' thro' the rie" by rabbie burns. she's scottish, you know. billie closed his eyes dreamily. as soon as sophie finished, billie sat upright irritably.
"sophie! sing more!"
"no, i'm cold. blanket."
"NO!! only i'm allowed to have blanket!"
"no, no...billie, i meant a real blanket."
"oh..."
billie got up to fetch one. aiden and i made a couple lame attempts at conversation. then billie came back with a blanket, under which he and sophie crawled and stayed for a very long time.
"oh yeah, i've got a new boyfriend...you should meet him, really," aiden said after a while.
"oh yeah?"
"yeah, but...i think i should just warn you...he's not the brightest of the bunch."
"no?"
"yeah...i thought it was a mental problem at first, but no. he's just kind of stupid."
"really?"
"yeah...but he's still a good guy, you know, really nice and all." she paused. "and really good-looking."
"yeah? well, thats--that's good."
there was a silence. then the blanket containing sophie and billie started rolling. it crashed into a table, scattering a deck of cards onto the ground.
"do you...think we should leave or something?" aiden said.
"um...yeah, maybe."
but neither of us got up to leave.
"do you think we should watch tv?" i said.
"yeah, yeah."
"do you...do you know how to work the tivo?"
"nooo." she shook her head sadly.
another pause.
"well, we could....watch a...movie," aiden volunteered.
"yeah!"
so basically, we ended up watching the lion king down stairs, and when we came back up, sophie was making us all tea, and billie had a rather large bump on his head.
