Halloween celebrations and ghost stories
We have "ghost hunters" in Prince George's Co. according to an article in the Gazette, When things go strange, who you gonna call?: Not-for-profit ghost hunters track local, global myths and The Washington Examiner reports on Haunted houses, ghost tours and corn mazes -- oh my which includes the annual Goatman Hollow (the icon on this page is a drawing of the mythical Goatman). Children are already starting to celebrate Halloween in the schools as a class I was in today did and they have off on Fri. for Teacher Grading/Planning Day which gives them more celebration time.
The Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department is urging children and parents to be safe this Halloween.
The Department says that injuries from falls, burns and car accidents increase dramatically as a result of Oct. 31 parties and late-night trick-or-treating and suggests children stay in their homes, churches or schools for seasonal festivities.
Children who go out are urged to carry flashlights, discuss their routes with parents, stay on sidewalks and wear short, flame-resistant costumes. Parents are reminded to accompany their children and to inspect their candy before letting them eat it.

On Thurs., Oct. 29, there's HALLOWEEN STORY TIME, for all ages. 10:30 a.m., Beltsville Library, 4319 Sellman Rd. Free. 301-937-0294.
Davies Memorial Unitarian Universalist Church in Camp Springs is having a Halloween Party and Haunted House on Sat Oct 31, 4 - 6 PM. Free games, snacks and crafts will be provided. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Call 301-449-4308.
The City of District Heights will hold a Halloween Party beginning at sundown on the city's recreation ball field Oct. 30. There will be games, storytelling, a pumpkin hunt and free candy. Call 301-336-5633 for more information.
The City of New Carrollton will also hold a Halloween Party from noon to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 31 at the New Carrollton Municipal Center at 6016 Princess Garden Parkway. The event is open to children ages 12 years and younger. Call 301-459-6100.
And for something totally different:
Davies Memorial Unitarian Universalist Church will host a hands-on visual art workshop for students in grades 3 through 12 in honor of the Day of the Dead. Led by Clinton resident Caryl Henry Alexander, the workshop will include creating a traditional altar honoring the deceased. The Day of the Dead (El Día de los Muertos) is a holiday celebrated in Mexico and by Latin Americans living in the United States and Canada. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. Registration for the workshop, which will be 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 7 at 7400 Temple Hill Rd. in Camp Springs, is $35 and must be done in advance by e-mailing caryl@bigbanners.com or by calling 301-877-2029.
