Some bills that will affect Marylanders in all counties
Yesterday I listed some bills that will affect only Prince Georgians in the Maryland state legislature. Here is a list of bills that have to do with human rights and apparently won't cost the taxpayers anything (and could increase the number of taxpayers and reduce the burden to the system):
HB 902 Family and Medical Leave Act - The bill will require employers subject to the federal Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 to allow their employees to take leave under the FMLA to care for additional family members, including domestic partners and children of domestic partners.
HB 474 Human Relations - Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity - Antidiscrimination A hearing is scheduled on February 25 at 1:00 p.m. in the House Health and Government Operations Committee. The equivalent Senate bill will have a hearing on March 4 at 1:00 p.m. in the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee. Here's a page with lots of information to understand this issue better.
HB 1055 Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act - this should get rid of fears that religious organizations will be forced to marry people whom do not come under their faith requirements. I don't know why there needs to be a bill, because I think religions can refuse to marry certain people now, but apparently some don't believe this is true. Interfaith marriages are not allowed in some religions, but if I wanted an interfaith marriage, I'd go to another religion or get married by the court. A hearing is scheduled on March 12 at 1:00 p.m. in the House Judiciary Committee.
HB 1215 Inheritance Tax - Exemption - Domestic Partners - A hearing has not yet been scheduled.
HB 182 Freedom of Association and Assembly Protection Act of 2009 - protection against inappropriate surveillance and data collection by the police; "prohibiting a law enforcement agency from collecting, disseminating, or maintaining specified information in a criminal intelligence database unless the information is directly related to specified criminal activity" This is a first amendment issue.
