100 years into our future, the earth is barren and the air toxic. Gideon Anderson and his wife Siobhan have adopted baby Matthew, who was discovered in his dying mother's arms after a Predator attack on a residential colony. The mother was wearing an ancient ID bracelet to which was fastened a computer chip. The data on the chip included a video diary from the year 2021, a man called Connor Temple telling whoever found the chip that it contained all the research that led to the building of a machine that created an anomaly - and that they didn't know what it would do.
