Recap: Season Four, Episode Two
My computer recently died. While my new computer is fabulous in many ways, and far better for work, it doesn't have any way to screencap. So, once I've gotten through the next couple episodes which I already had screencapped, there will be no more screencap recaps, sadly.
That said, enjoy this one here on eljay or here on dw.
Five years ago.
A woman wakes up, hearing noises. Her husband does not wake up. She picks her way through the house and finds a small Creature. When it tries to bite her, she flushes it down the loo. Bad form, that woman.
Credits.
Matt debriefs Abby and Connor, separately.
"It was hard. We kept each other alive, somehow."
"I promised that I'd carry on with Professor Cutter's work."
"And now we're fired."
"It's not like that."
"Then do something. Get us back on the team."
Lester and Philip watch the debriefs. Well, Lester watches. Philip's busy with a PDA or phone or something. Lester wants them back on the team; Philip has no intention of bending the rules. He does manage to get Abby appointed to run the menagerie, but Philip won't even consider Connor.
Abby and Connor find their old lockers, along with Danny's. Lester had them rescued from the old ARC.
I wonder who had the lockers under them?
Lester offers Abby the menagerie job. She turns it down for Connor's sake, but he talks her into it while he goes flat hunting.
"Hey. Oi. You take it."
"It's fine."
"Think of Rex. He'll be an orphan if we both go. Anyway, one of us has got to look for somewhere new to live."
"I'm doing what I can for you, but it's complicated. I need you to keep a low profile. Just for now. Oh, and Connor?...Please, stay out of trouble."
The Poolbeg towers! Oh no, wait, we're in 'London', aren't we. They must be something else.
In a warehouse near the not!Poolbeg towers, some workers are working.
Connor catches Becker's eye as he leaves. Jess chases him to give him her address and keys so he can use her internet. Connor is astounded.
"You don't know me."
"I've read the files. I know you."
Jess gives Abby her snap bracelet ID. It kind of looks like Abby hasn't washed her hair yet.
Abby heads into the Menagerie. Inside she sees the Mammoth wandering around AND REX IT'S REX, YOU GUYS, REX IS THERE ALSO.
Matt watches her on the CCTV.
Later he reports to Gideon.
"Connor's angry at being sidelined. He's impulsive."
"Then he's still a risk. And Abby?"
"My gut tells me she won't be a problem."
"You have to treat them all as equally dangerous. It could be any of them. It could be all of them."
"Yeah, I know. I'm ready."
Back at the warehouse, the worker is eaten by something.
Connor lets himself into Jess' flat. It's quite nice.
Matt meets Abby as she leaves the Menagerie. The two have a careful conversation where they attempt to feel each other out.
"I thought the military approach was to shoot first and worry about ethics later."
"I was in the army for a few years, Abby. It doesn't make me trigger happy."
...
"Animals just do what their instincts tell them. I like that."
"You think we should be more like them? Follow our instincts?"
"Wouldn't be such a bad idea."
Connor is obediently looking up places to stay. Bored, he flicks onto a sighting website and finds a picture of Duncan.
Following the address, he finds a ratty old house. Picking his way inside, he finds Cameras over some of the doors. Duncan has gone completely paranoid, but eventually he lets Connor in. He has a Wall'o'Crazy.
"Duncan. Good to see you, mate."
"Show me some ID."
"This is my ID."
"I'm not listed anywhere. How did you find me?"
"I called your mum."
Connor attempts to make up, but Duncan isn't having any of it. He's been searching for evidence of incursions since Tom's death.
"Duncan. Duncan! What happened to you?"
"You did, Connor. You happened to me."
He gives Connor a walkie talkie and leads him to the warehouse. People have been disappearing around here. Connor suggests they're just moving away but Duncan tells him there are bodies.
Connor is busy dismissing him when they find a bit of body. Connor starts poking in all the dark corners until he finds a body. He tries to keep Duncan from seeing but Duncan is insistent.
"Seen it?"
"Yeah."
"Good. We're going."
Connor calls Abby, who Mapquests the warehouse and goes after him.
Matt, watching, copies the directions. He then heads out. Jess demands chocolate from him.
She tells Becker that Matt's being weird and then proceeds to blunder through a conversation about Becker's preferences. Becker is mildly amused but not up for gossiping about Matt. Also he calls her Jessica.
"You read his file?"
"Yeah. I read everyone's file. That's my job. Not that I've read your file. The personal bits, I mean. Nothing about wives or girlfriends or boyfriends, anything like that. And if you did have one of those, it would probably be a girlfriend, would it? Rather than the other options, I mean...anyway. About Matt..."
"Leave it, Jessica. He knows what he's doing."
Jess tracks Matt's Black Box as he leaves the building.
Abby is already at the docks. Duncan is very impressed at Connor's pulling power.
Connor brings Abby to see the body but it's gone.
"What made you think it was a Creature kill?"
"Uh, lateral incisions, the throat had been torn out. There was a big chunk gnawed out of his side. And I think it was his left leg, hanging by a thread."
"So, not natural causes, then."
"Not so much, no."
Jess sees Matt heading for the docks. Becker still doesn't care.
Connor attempts to get rid of the builders. So does Abby. They're not listening and will probably die.
The Creature attacks. Connor tells Duncan to run. Matt arrives and all three pile into his car. The Creature attacks before vanishing into the rafters.
Matt - possibly deliberately - slightly misidentifies the Creature. He splits them up, sending Abby to check one side of the perimeter. He and Connor will take the other side. Duncan - is somewhere, I guess?
Jess is still watching Matt on her screen and Becker's finally concerned. He gets a team together and heads out.
"Look at that erratic pattern of movement."
"Nothing's showing. No anomalies."
"He's chasing something."
"Yeah. Or being chased."
Matt gives Connor an earpiece. Connor's very impressed.
"Sorry. That's quite cool."
Jess sends out the alert. The ARC seems to have a lot of power; Jess has closed the harbour and got the coast guard on alert.
Abby sees the Creature head into the water. She commandeers a boat to follow it. It doesn't like the boat much. Abby, if I'd been kidnapped off a boat by a Mer, I'd be a little more wary about following a Creature in a boat...
The Creature heads for the cargo ship and they all follow. Connor tells Duncan to stay by the car. Hands up if you think that's going to stick?
Abby sees the Creature on the forward deck, but by the time Matt and Connor get there it's vanished. Matt heads into the hold to look for it.
"I'm heading into the hold."
"I'll double check this level, report back."
"I thought you were fired."
"I'm working out my notice!"
Matt does not go to the hold. Instead he goes to a deck stacked with containers that are being unloaded. A crew member is welding on deck. Matt goes to warn him, and the Creature attacks. Luckily, Becker is behind it and fires with an EMD.
They load it into a container and start lifting it off the ship. Why don't they just carry it off?
"Who's your mate, Connor?"
"He's an old friend. Duncan, me and Tom, that was my gang. - Friends, whatever. Tom was killed a couple of years back by a Creature. I don't think Duncan ever got over it. If anything had happened to him, you know..."
The Creature starts to wake up while the container is still overhead. The Container comes loose; Duncan dodges into a maze of containers to avoid it. The Creature breaks out and goes after him. Connor goes after them; Matt blocks Abby when she tries to follow.
"I am not letting another friend die. You do what you have to do."
"No, not you! Look. You're on my team now. You've got to take your orders from me. I won't let him get hurt."
The team suit up with flares and EMDs - which they're not allowed to use - and head into the maze.
"Only use your EMDs as a last resort. These are steel containers. It could ricochet anywhere."
Duncan is very lost, and there are scary sounds.
Connor remembers his walkie talkie and uses it to call Duncan. Duncan tells him he's by red and green containers. Most of the containers are red or green. Connor is not comforted.
Abby gets separated from her soldier, and he is attacked. He fires on the Creature, but the bolt rebounds and hits him, and he is eaten.
Abby is now alone in the maze.
The Creature comes after Duncan, who shoves himself through a narrow gap. Connor finds him and locks him into a container until they can deal with the Creature. Which is now behind him.
He runs into Abby, who uses her flare to scare the Creature off. He heads towards Becker.
Matt and his guard catch up Abby and Connor. They've driven the Creature right to Becker, who can't see it because he didn't think to look up. Everyone fires and the Creature is taken out.
Connor and Abby go back to look for Duncan, who is 'definitely in a green container.'
Back at the ARC Matt hands over his Black Box to be charged. They've figured that the Anomaly must have opened years ago. Matt deflects Philip's praise onto Connor and Abby. He wants them back on his team; Lester does some quick talking to get them there.
"We can't have rogue operators."
"Then you'll have to look them up. It's the only way you'll stop them."
"I suppose, given that Abby and Connor were formerly employed before the military rule came into force, technically, they aren't covered by it."
"So they're back in."
"Legally, they were never out."
Connor and Abby bring Duncan home. Duncan is sad, but Connor talks him up.
"I ran away, Connor. I'm not exactly Indiana Jones."
"You're a hero. And I'll tell you for why. No one else cared to investigate those deaths. Without you, that croc'd still be killing people."
...
"If you do come across anything else online, call me. You've got my number."
"You want me to help out? Do I get a special badge or something?"
"No...I'll see what I can do."
And there's a secret handshake. Also, Duncan approves of Abby.
At the ARC Jess demands her chocolate from Matt, who was busy. Becker has remembered, though.
Jess invites Connor and Abby to move in with her until they find somewhere else.
Lester comes out of his office, all huffy. Connor has a rant at him - love Matt's face to Becker - and Lester sighs and puts him back on the team.
"I suppose this is what you think of as not getting into any trouble!"
"Listen, Lester. You need to know something. You can sack me, but you can't stop me doing this work. Threaten me, disown me, banish me, whatever. But if I think there's a Creature loose, I'm gonna investigate it. Ok?"
"Well, since you put it like that...you're back on the team."
"Blimey. I should get angry more often. And I want a pay rise!"
"Don't push your luck."
Jess and the others reach her flat. Connor and Abby get ready to snuggle, but Jess sits between them and is perky.
"New roomies. Brilliant!"
