It's been a really long time, I know. I'm sorry. Life, y'know.
As always, screencaps versions on eljay
here and on dw
here. Oooh, creepy old house. That's never a good sign.
Fourteen years ago, the house was neither creepy nor old. Several teens and pre teens break in, using a key cunningly hidden on top of the earth in a planter. Smart. Inside, they spread out and look around. It's a really nice house.
Two of the kids head upstairs to skateboard. Another goes to poke around in the kitchen, but his friend's dying screams interrupt him. Typical. No respect, these kids.
He heads back into the foyer and looks warily upstairs. There are chattering noises and things breaking upstairs. He edges up a few steps, calling for his friends.
Something lunges at him and he falls back downstairs. He can't see anything, but it's there.
Credits! Jason Flemyng shows up in the credits, but there's no picture of him.
At the ARC Sarah's been working hard on Nick's project, trying to trace down the kirin - the Chinese Unicorn. Nick listens to her explain for a few moments before stepping into a lab. Connor's on their heels.
The main part of the lab is taken up with Nick's Matrix - a free standing modern-art looking thing, all strings and thin metal strands. They're using this to plot Anomaly appearances in the past. Connor's a huge fan.
"Connor, if you touch that, you could change the entire destiny of the universe."
Jenny comes in, surprised to see the Matrix. How long have they been working on it?
Sarah explains it again.
"Like a road map. Of time."
Nick's hoping this will lead to them being able to predict Anomalies. Jenny suggests doing it on a computer.
"This way is more tangible."
"It makes him feel more like God. You know, the whole creation thing."
Nick uses the Matrix to predict an Anomaly.
Abby and Connor are working in the Control Room when Nick and Sarah burst in. Becker and Claudia come to listen as he explains that he's confident in his prediction, but the time's a bit off.
"It could happen tomorrow, it could happen years from now. I want you to go and check it out, and take Sid and Nancy with you."
Abby and Connor are Not Impressed.
Sarah offers to go, but Nick wants her to stay and help him.
"Help! I've been taken hostage by an obsessive scientist."
"Welcome to our world!"
The team, in very nice white vehicles, pull up near the old house. Access is across a relatively rickety bridge.
"We'd better go check it out."
"Then what? We just sit there twiddling our thumbs until the anomaly appears?"
"Something like that."
"Hold me back, I don't think I can take the excitement!"
I love the way he says 'tek'...ahem. Back on topic.
Connor and his charming red trousers lead the way onto the porch. The girls stand around while he checks windows; Abby invokes trouble by remarking "It seems quiet enough."
Jenny peers through the front door, frowning at a shadow - it's getting closer -
It's Connor, who got in through an open window.
The place is a mess. Connor remarks on the smell, which Abby says is like they've been keeping animals. The three wander around for a while - where is Becker? Wasn't he supposed to be with them? - and Jenny says they'll stay for a while but not indefinitely.
"So you don't think Cutter's wrong?"
"I think he's crazy, but not wrong."
"Sounds like he's getting under your skin."
"Abby, have you ever been attracted to somebody you don't even like?"
"Ha! I fall for the wrong men all the time!"
Hey, guys, look at that really conspicuous crime scene tape hanging there. Think that's got anything to do with why the place is abandoned?
Abby finds a large room and is looking around when ash falls from the chimney. She pokes her head in to look, assuming it's a trapped bird.
In the kitchen, Connor's on his mobile when Abby screams his name. He hangs up and bolts after her.
Connor finds the room, but it's empty. He searches around in a panic, noticing the same ash fall.
Abby jumps him from behind, inducing heart attack. What fun.
Where exactly is Jenny at the moment? Did she really not hear that scream?
Connor immediately pretends he wasn't scared. Abby gives him a kiss on the cheek to thank him for coming after her.
Oddly, there seem to be fireplaces on two adjacent walls, one of which definitely backs onto another room. Weird.
Sarah has escaped Nick to gather some research materials. Helen walks into her, knocking her supplies all over the street.
There is vaguely suspicious banter and Helen is now aware that Sarah is researching the Kirin. How does she even know about Sarah in the first place?
Oh, evil look. She's good at those.
Back at the house Jenny leads the others out onto the porch. Danny is lounging against one of the pillars; he flashes his badge and demands to know what they're doing. Jenny tells him they're visiting.
"The way I see it, you're either burglars or trespassers."
"Do we look like burglars to you?"
"I'm pretty sure I've seen laughing boy on a wanted poster."
Jenny tries to tell him they're property developers. Since she very obviously gets the idea from a nearby property sign, Danny isn't biting.
"I should arrest you, but to be quite frank I can't be bothered. You people aren't worth the paperwork."
They're about to leave when Connor asks for clarification on 'you people'. "Murder tourists. You make me sick. Now get out."
Connor chooses this moment to mouth off. "Can I just say that I think the police do a fantastic job? The occasional lapse into cliché is understandable in the circumstances." Smart, Connor.
Danny doesn't like you.
They're watched as they leave by a little girl in a red coat.
Jenny leaves Abby to keep an eye on the house and takes Connor 'to get some answers'. Abby notices the girl.
Helen sends a Clone into the ARC. He's wearing a camera and she watches the images from outside. He sees Nick and the Matrix but doesn't touch.
At the entrance Becker is hazing Sarah, who's lost her pass card. That's because the Clone is using it.
Another soldier checks the logs and finds that Sarah's already scanned into the building. Becker sets off an alarm, which Nick hears.
The Clone is breaking into Nick's locker - why is it labelled Nic, I wonder? - and steals a jacket. Becker catches him in the act and is forced to shoot him when the Clone refuses to back down. Nick walks in in time to recognise him.
"I know this man...that's impossible."
"Why?"
"I watched him die in the Silurian desert, millions of years ago."
Danny and another officer are practising on the firing range. Danny gets all his marks and we're very impressed.
Afterwards he asks the other officer about the Brooks case - that's the name of the house Jenny and the others were exploring. The other officer is tired of Danny trying to make a case out of it. He orders Danny to leave it alone.
"I haven't got time for this."
"Make time, sir!"
"Because of your history with that house, I'll pretend you didn't speak to a senior officer like that. Forget it, Danny. It's over."
"...not for me."
Abby's swinging on a porch swing when something in the house looks out at her through the window. Thunder cracks overhead and she jumps off the swing just in time to avoid the open window behind her. She wanders across the lawn.
The little girl is watching her.
Jenny and Connor find an estate agent somewhere else in town. He relates the prologue to them and gives them the name of the survivor.
Abby's still wandering through the garden - weird how nothing came of that thunder - when she notices a curtain moving upstairs in the house. She goes to investigate. The house creaks as she heads for the stairs.
Jenny and Connor are at a funfair trying to talk to Ryan, the survivor of the house. He's really uninterested.
Abby wanders into a bedroom and looks out at the garden. There are noises behind an old mattress that's propped against the wall; Abby squeezes in behind it.
Ryan starts talking.
Abby's found a secret room. She pulls back a curtain to look through the window; the light reveals a Creature, perched on the wall and watching her.
Ryan tells us about the prologue again. He saw an Anomaly, though of course he didn't know what it was.
Abby's twigged that something's there. As Ryan tells us in voiceover that he ran, she darts out of the room. Something chases her.
In the past, Ryan threw soot at a Creature so he could see it. That was smart.
Abby is surprised at the top of the stairs by the Creature. She trips and goes head over heels backwards down the stairs, landing in a heap at the bottom.
Instead of eating her, the Creature ignores her.
Jenny and Connor head back towards the house. They find Abby semi conscious and concussed. Jenny takes her to hospital and leaves Connor to keep an eye on the house. She tells him to wait outside.
Becker and Sarah are trying to persuade Nick that he's wrong about the Clone. Becker floats the Identical Twin theory. Sarah doesn't really have a theory, she just thinks Nick's wrong.
"What's he doing here, then, going through my laundry?"
"You kill his brother, so he steals your shirt."
Nick's pretty sure it has something to do with Helen. Becker doesn't think so.
"Rule number one: if something inexplicable happens, Helen's usually behind it. Trust me, she's back."
Connor is at the house and getting bored. He sees the girl and waves, but she doesn't answer. He realises he's left his phone inside and goes after it. The girl yells to warn him but he goes anyway.
The Creature has found the phone.
Connor lets himself in starts looking, but is almost immediately nabbed by Danny and arrested. He attempts to talk his way out of it, but since he can't actually tell Danny anything, it doesn't work.
The estate agent comes to look around the house.
Connor demands his rights, even though he's not sure what they are.
"I demand habeas corpus!...I would if I actually knew what it meant. I know my rights!"
"Name them."
"You what?"
"Name them!"
"...Phonecall! I get a phonecall."
"Good lad."
Danny really wants to know what he was doing in the house. Connor asks for a phone call. Danny wanders off.
Jenny and Abby return to the house just as Connor calls them. Jenny goes to save him, leaving Abby to watch the house.
Nick's fiddling with the Matrix again.
Danny's watching Connor. It's a little creepy.
Much later that evening Abby's sitting in the ARC Jeep when she hears a bike bell. She sees the little girl ride by and follows her.
The Creature is also following.
Abby finds the bike on the ground and the Creature eating. She sneaks behind some bushes to observe. The girl is above it on a tree branch, feeding it from her rucksack.
Abby tries to get closer but snaps a branch. Alerted, the Creature flips into camouflage and bounds off.
Abby and the girl look at each other.
The girl, Emily, explains that she's taken on the job of feeding the Creature so it won't eat the pets. Abby offers to take over for her.
Jenny comes to spring Connor.
"I've been going stir crazy."
"You were only in there a few hours."
"Alright, so I'm not Nelson Mandela. It doesn't mean I haven't suffered."
Danny isn't happy, but Jenny overrides him; when he questions her, she gets the Home Secretary on the phone and Danny is ordered to leave it alone. The house has been removed from police jurisdiction and placed under ARC control.
"If you go near that house again, none of your fancy phonecalls will help you. Leave it to the professionals."
"It's now out of police jurisdiction. It's government business. So if you or any of your people go there again, you'll be trespassing. Leave it to the professionals."
I wonder if she really got the Home Secretary on the phone, or just some guy? Would Danny know the difference? I wouldn't recognise any member of our government, but then I'm very uninterested in politics...
Abby calls to tell them about the Creature's camouflage. Jenny orders her to stay out until Becker and his backup can get there, but Ryan's busy breaking in and Abby loads a tranq gun and follows him.
A horror movie commences as Abby wanders around the house, pointing her gun at things and hearing noises. The Creature sneaks around behind her. I'm trying not to watch, to be honest. I've never liked this kind of scene.
She almost shoots Ryan when he walks out behind her. The Creature locks them in and starts throwing things at them. Abby can't get a bead on it. She and Ryan try to retreat upstairs.
Connor and Jenny burst in and Connor takes the lead up the stairs. They leave Ryan downstairs. That seems dangerous. Also why is completely unarmed Jenny with them? Shouldn't she be liaising with someone outside?
They find the estate agent hiding in the bath. Jenny tells him to be quiet, but he continues to scream and thrash. The Creature gets him. Ryan seems to have disappeared; the estate agent dies in the downstairs hall, and Ryan's not there.
And then Danny comes in and Ryan suddenly is there. Jenny tries to talk Danny down, but he's having none of it and aims his gun at Ryan.
Turns out Danny's little brother was one of the children who vanished and Danny blames him. He almost shoots Ryan - why doesn't Abby get him with the tranq? He's not looking at her - but doesn't do it in the end.
Creature attack! Connor urges it to stay still so he can aim; it helpfully does so, but he still doesn't shoot. The Anomaly Detector goes off as an Anomaly opens in the ballroom. The Creature is fascinated.
Jenny and the others edge in. Connor is about to shoot but Abby tells him not to; the Creature wants to return home. It steps through and Jenny wanders up to the Anomaly to look.
The Creature reappears and Danny bursts in, shooting it a lot. It falls back through the Anomaly. Everyone stands around and gasps a lot.
Becker's team secure the house. Ryan watches; Danny apologises for thinking it was him.
"I thought it was you."
"Yeah, I got that."
"I'm sorry."
"You couldn't have known. Nobody could."
Abby sees Emily and waves.
Danny suggests that his brother might have gone through the Anomaly, since there was no body ever found. Jenny suggests letting go of the past. Danny agrees and wanders off. Yeah, right.
Back at the station he's practising on the range again. His superior wanders up to be told Danny's quitting.
"I'm quitting, boss. We both know I wasn't right for this job."
...
"What are you gonna do?"
"I'll think of something."
He hands in his gun and leaves.
At the ARC Nick's messing with the Matrix. This is good news for Helen, who lets herself into his house. She picks up a comb and rescues a single hair. She also takes a swab from a glass. Nick lets himself in and she's almost caught, but she slips away.
