Just another fan

Hey, house it going. Thought I would tell my PZB story-everybody has one, of the first time they ran across a PZB book and went, what is this? This looks interesting. I found Drawing Blood in the Library of a US Submarine (but can’t tell you anymore because the rest is classified) so God bless the US Navy. I read it in my rack from cover to cover ( Read more... )

I discovered Swamp Foetus in my local library. I read it more or less cover to cover that night, went back the next day and put in requests for the others. Being a confused teenager, the sexuality helped confirm a few things and Poppy's writing style was one that just felt instantly comfortable with me. I've read (and own) everything now up to Liquor, and I will get the books I'm missing when my current woes are resolved.

I'm probably an unusual fan. I'd read none of Doc's stuff until my GF checked Triads and Liquor out of the library. I don't generally read horror, or vampire novels, or much in the goth genre. Everyone I knew who was a fan had either read them years ago, or were fresh in the throes of Their Darkness.

So when GF (who *does* have a fondness for the genre) brought home the books, I went "meh" and didn't think much about them - until I'd read all of *my* library books and had nothing to read in bed one night. I started Triads, and didn't get to sleep until late that night. Then I picked up Liquor, and I was hooked immediately.

Still haven't read the older books. Might never read them. But will read and re-read everything in the "liquor-verse", and whatever else I see here and there. And I'm a devoted reader of the Dispatches.

I first read Lost Souls when I was in high school. I remember I was at a party at a friend's house wearing my favorite Cure shirt (Wish Tour) and some guy walked up to me and said, "If you like the Cure, you'll like this." He tossed the book at me and walked off. I think I read the whole thing later that night after I got home and devoured everything I could by PZB after that. I still have my first copy of Lost Souls and read it whenever I'm between books or feeling like I need something familiar inside. I have a spare copy that I lend out to friends so that nothing happens to my original. That book is an extension of me and I think that if I ever did lose it, it would be like losing a limb. It's so awesome to see that the books mean so much to so many others. Ol' Doc's really gotten us through some good and bad times.
