Log 23: Tree murder

Mar 23, 2010 15:20

Are the trees in the forest important to anyone? I thought I'd ask the crew first before knocking a few down.

[Samus was up in the forest standing amidst the creek, practicing some staff fighting on her own. Rather than using a wooden staff, she had taken to a barbell, a nice 45 pound (20 kg for you metric folks) beating stick.]

[Andrew has been acquainting himself with the boat since arriving here this weekend, but only now has he discovered the forest.

...he shouldn't go into the forest. Especially with that sound coming from within. For all he knows, there could be a demon in there eating woodland creatures.

Something better to think about, though? Why is there a forest on this boat?

Against his better judgment, he ventures a little ways into the forest, glancing back over his shoulder every couple of seconds.

Imagine his surprise in seeing a... rather attractive-looking woman hitting a tree. Interesting.]

Uhm... hello? Are you alright?

[Yes, he is ready to turn around and run at any moment. He's good at that.]

[She shot a quick glance over her shoulder, assessing the man fast. He was no threat to her, unless he had some hidden ability. Many on the boat did. Either way, she slipped out of her stance and set one end of her barbell down before turning to face him.

She wiped a bit of sweat off her forehead before speaking.]

Yes. Just training.

[He shifts awkwardly a little under her gaze. His hidden talent is of no use on this boat, even if he did try to use it. Summoning demons probably wouldn't work so well here. Not that he even wants to. He's through with the evil gig and demon stuff is pretty evil.]

Uhm, training for what? Are you, like, a ninja? [He chuckles a little to himself.

...but that would be so cool.]

Bounty Hunter ...

[She didn't know what a ninja was, but assumed it was some sort of warrior.]

The boat's a violent place. There's a few that I expect to have to defend myself or others from.

[His smile drops and he suddenly looks a little frightened.]

It... it is? What kind of people would you have to defend against? [Seriously? Herz said they'd been saved, he didn't say anything about danger. Andrew just got done with danger. He's had his fill for his whole life, thanks.]

Just a couple men I don't trust at all. They have priors of killing people.

[She sees that he's getting frightened, and tries to backtrack a bit.]

Even if they weren't here, I'd still train for the exercise.

[The backtrack doesn't help much to ease his worry. She said there's people who kill people. As if he hadn't had to worry enough in the last year about getting killed, now he has to worry about it here, too?]

I... I thought we were brought here to be saved from something, not hurt by something.

The captain apparently is in this business to save everyone he can. He doesn't seem to be filtering who comes through his system.

Name's Samus. You let me know if anyone's threatening you. And watch out for Erol and Gannondorf.

[Andrew smiles a little. Is he making a friend? That's nice.

Erol... Ganondorf. Those sound like demons names, but none that Andrew's ever heard of.]

Okay! I'll do that, then. Oh, and I'm Andrew.

[His voice takes on an overly casual tone; she's not being mean, so he wants to make sure it stays that way.]

So... where are you from?

I grew up on Zebes, but I was originally from K-2L. I doubt those names mean anything to you though ... they're in the Milky Way, far from Earth.

What about you? Earth?

[Woah. That is so cool.]

Yeah, uh, Earth. Which is probably infinitesimally less cool than anywhere in the Milky Way.

So, uhm, are you human then? Or, like, something else?

I hear Earth is nice. Never been ...

Me? I'm human ...

[Technically. I think.]

Oh. Me, too.

[He shifts awkwardly. This girl has that same intimidating presence as Buffy. Or every girl he's ever known. But more intimidating than most. Must be that 'strong woman' thing. Not that he doesn't like strong women, he's rather fond of them, actually; if Buffy was any indication, they're pretty good at keeping someone like him out of trouble if they're on the same side. But the one problem is that he starts running out of things to say. Odd, for him.

He lets his eyes drift upwards, gazing at the treetops.]

...weird. How's there's a whole forest of trees on a boat, huh?

We're not on a boat, that's how.

[She braces her weight on her barbell. Answering questions was a past time for her now.]

[Andrew chuckles a bit before realizing he doesn't get it. He could understand the forest being a glamor on the boat, but the other way around?]

Uhm... what?

A while back, the crew were giving straight answers in exchange for these little golden frogs that everyone had gotten; apparently they were valuable to them for some reason. Someone asked if we were really on a boat. Apparently this is a figment, a projection on our senses to make us think it's a boat. Didn't you ever question how this boat has hundreds of decks endlessly down?
