I figure I'll try to update now because I'm getting a bit frustrated with the song I'm working on. Christ, let's see if I can recall everything that's happened in the past week and a half.
1. Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song was a bit disappointing. The sound editing and soundtrack was pretty incredible and the different montages of bleak cityscapes and Melvin van Peebles on the run was the definite highlight, but the narrative was pretty difficult to grasp. It didn't feel the slightest bit explosive or revolutionary; perhaps it was at the time, but it's completely lost on me.
2. Work: Last week held a football game and a Christian rock concert. My brother was actually working concessions at the latter. His girlfriend's on the high school swim team and they always run one of the stands in the arena, so he joined her and helped out.
3. Concerts: I tabled at Club Downunder for the Jesu concert on the Saturday before last. They were rather disappointing and I realized that their songs never build up and only stagnate. Wolves in the Throne Room were much better, creating a sonically dense wall of post-metal. They seemed to play at either a rather slow tempo or as fast as they could. Two days later, Caribou came to town and performed. The mix was a little off, but the sheer sonic nature of their sound overcame it. Dan Snaith sounds better vocally live than on the record, too, and the dual drum action was a joy to behold, even though the main drum easily could have held his own. I'd like to see him compete with the guys that drummed for Long Fin Killie. Born Ruffians can still kiss my ass, though.
4. Other events: 80's Night on Sundays, as usual, but there's little to comment on there. And right now I can't really remember much else. I feel like I've been up to a lot, but it doesn't really seem like it from this entry. I just can't remember a lot of details. Let's get on with the music, isn't that what everyone comes here for? I hope so, because I certainly haven't felt the slightest bit entertaining in the past couple of months.
Simple Minds - "Someone, Somewhere in Summertime (Kid Jensen Version)"[Better than the album version, me thinks!]
The Three Degrees - "A Woman Needs a Good Man"[It's weird that my first exposure to them didn't come from any of their singles or their contribution to "TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)" but instead from a Lo-Fidelity Allstars album. Yes, it's still a guilty pleasure that I still listen to from time to time, mainly because they use a lot of luscious samples. The intro of this particular song runs throughout the entire length of "Vision Incision", and the most heartbreaking snippet of "If and When" was used in "Nighttime Story".]
The Durutti Column - "Tomorrow"(Who says Vini Reilly can't sing? He sounds particularly nice on this song!)
