Okay, so I've been trying to flesh-out the big-picture of Teh Rift so far in SV-land, but I know from memory that we were all bitching about how the change was poorly handled by tptb

Good luck. 8-)
Seriously, though? I thought they were doing unnecessary futzing around with the boys' characterizations as far back as S2.
I've since come to the conclusion that some of the weirdness on Lex's part (which started around the time of Dichotic) may have been because Lionel was already drugging Lex's scotch or brandy or whatever it was while he was living in the mansion with him.
But that's no excuse for Clark's bizarre behavior.

Yeah, Lex had told Clark he'd stopped investigating him and in Convenant Clark had the proof he hadn't.
In Mortal he'd set Clark up and risked the lives of Lana and his parents to do it.
I'd say those are pretty good reasons for Clark to be angry at Lex. As for Lex, he'd just gotten tired of Clark's secret and not being trustworthy enough to know it but Clark's been proven right in not trusting Lex with it. He's still obsessed with Clark's secret.
In Commencement he kidnapped Chloe to try and get her to tell him what she knew about Clark and the stones. Later, Lex had gone ballistic when found out that Lana knew it in Reckoning and wouldn't tell him. He even ended up killing her over it, although that didn't stick. This season he stil suspects something is up with Clark and he thought his guards describing someone who looked like Clar was the proof, but Lionel lied to protect Clark. I bet Lex didn't believe his dad.
He even ended up killing her over it, although that didn't stick.
Well I wouldn't say that Lex "killed her". Lana was driving whilst talking on the phone, and drove into a bus. Lex didn't help the situation, but Lana should really have pulled over when she was being so distracted
I'm pretty confused about the whole thing, myself. There've been Lex's general snooping/pushing and Clark's resistance since S1. They've both lied, or at least been less than honest, since the beginning. But the Rift was NEVER explained or illustrated to my satisfaction; it's been one giant Begging Of The Question.
The "actual," Rift, YMMV, for me is that conversation in the wrecked farmhouse in "Arrival," where Lex asks Clark one more time to level with him, Clark refuses, and Lex walks off. I think that was the last straw for Lex.
I see a multi-day event for me, in the future, whenever I might have a bunch of time anymore, to skim all eps just for the details on this one question.
Here via sv_ledger. Your subject heading is really an interesting way to put it. For SV's case, it's just as clear and easy to tell as the exact link between humans and apes. :D

yay, thank you attaccabottoni for the pointer to the ledger!
Interesting idea that The Rift is the final separation. I think the last time Clark defended Lex/was open-minded about Lex being involved in something was when Milton Fine was teaching in Granville and giving LexCorp a pounding....(oh, yeah...if only!!) cuz I remember Clark saying, "I defended you!" to Lex.
