Beyond this hyperlink. Personality:
Ever since the death of his sister at the orphanage and his lack of ability to save her, he has refused to let the same experience happen again. Akihiko took up boxing to not only learn how to fight, but to become better. The death of Miki blind him to the point of obsessing to become strong, and it wasn’t until after Shinjiro’s death that he realizes this. While he was talking to Shinjiro at his remembrance, Akihiko openly admitted to him that it didn’t matter how strong he was, strength wasn’t enough. Akihiko can’t bear the idea of being weak. It disgusts him to the point where he spends a majority of his free time training and fighting. Whenever the SEES team is ready to depart for Tartarus, Akihiko is often the first one to speak asking or insisting he join the party. This is his desire to train and practice so he can fight to protect the ones he loves. His vow to grow strong is what drives him to improve day after day.
He realized the path he was going down wasn’t the right one. This became the point in which he grows emotionally, knowing full well that there were still responsibilities to uphold. It doesn’t stop him from wanting to become stronger, but it did tell him that he also needed to become better. During his period of bitter emotion over his sister, Akihiko wasn’t able to socialize very well. He was very reserved and introverted. These conditions changed upon the closure which was found while talking to Shinjiro’s remembrance.
After Shinjiro’s death he starts fighting for more than just himself, but Shinjiro too. Perhaps even Miki, although it’s only revealed for Shinji in the game. Some quotes in the game demonstrate this, like “I fight for him as well” and “Did you see that Shinji?” This isn’t regarded in a negative view, but rather a positive one. Akihiko doesn’t dwell on Shinji’s death. He instead uses it as motivation. Also during the answer, it was shown that grieved over Minato’s death. Just like the first process, his angst over this for awhile until he saw the truth. Akihiko recovered from his angst and accepted the fact. It was from this point on he could truly move on and be happy. Knowing his friend was still out their protecting them.
Akihiko is working to learn from his experiences; however, this challenge is one he has not yet fully accomplished as Akihiko constantly struggles with this, but it doesn’t stop him from trying. This isn’t openly expressed for all to see. Akihiko also has a small tendency to hide his problems from the others because he doesn’t want his friends to worry. Part of this is because he doesn’t want to be seen as weak. The only one who seems to be aware of this is Mitsuru.
He has a tendency to turn things into a game. It’s become a habit of his, especially that of fighting. Each new challenge that presents itself is but a small obstacle that Akihiko works to overcome. One example of this habit is revealed while they were on vacation at the beach. Minato, Junpei, and Akihiko did an “Operation Babe Hunt.” At first, Akihiko didn’t have interest to take part in this until it became a challenge, a game. He wanted to win even if he didn’t have any interest in picking up women. Another example of this would be during a battle after using a strong combo. He’ll call out “K.O!” As he finishes off the opponent he’s fighting.
No matter how hopeless the situation may be, Akihiko isn’t the type to give up. He prefers to fight to the very end and even past that. One example is toward the beginning of the game when he was rendered down for the count he insisted on joining the battle, in which Mitsuru told him not to. Respecting her wishes, he did not, but he was still eager to join. Another is shown when the SEES group is encountered with the decision or forgetting their past or fighting Nyx in the small chance that they’ll win. He was tired of running away from things, and during his talk with Ken he said “I’ll look it straight in the eye.” This was his confirmation that he wanted to fight Nyx even if he can’t win. Finally during battle after a victory while he has low health. “Don’t worry. I can still keep going.” This only proves his determination and his drive.
When it comes to girls, he tends to lose interest. He doesn’t share the same views as Junpei. Not caring to spy on them (partly because he fears Mitsuru and her execution style. Possibly implying a similar experience might have happened.) Akihiko is wildly popular with the girls at school, and it annoys him. During one of the cut scenes it plainly revealed that he tries to ignore them when they flock to him. Even during Operation Babe Hunt he only chooses to participate not to pick up a chick, but win a challenge against Junpei and Minato. It’s clear that he isn’t really looking for a girl, and that the only one he seems opened to is Mitsuru (assuming you’re playing from Minato.)
He does hold some submission toward Mitsuru. Both in personality and persona, it’s mentioned that his persona is weaker against Mitsuru’s. This is hilariously highlighted and made very obvious to Mitsuru’s execution during the hot springs event. He is clearly intimidated by her on some level, but only when she is against him. Otherwise they view each other as equals. Akihiko isn’t exactly smooth in everything he does. In fact he’s quite a derp. When he isn’t in battle or training to become better, he has quite a different nature to him. Akihiko becomes slightly bashful and even sweet. Parts of him are even oblivious such as concerning Akihiko’s habit about turning everything into a game. Mitsuru points this out and even criticizes it, yet it hasn’t stopped him from doing it.
He doesn’t believe in superstitions, and though not widely advertised there is a part of the game that he mentions it. At the beginning of the New Year, the girls went down to the shrine. Ken asked if Junpei and Akihiko wanted to come. Akihiko replied with “Nah. I don’t believe in superstitions.”
Akihiko has a bit of a short temper when someone verbally attacks him directly. He’s quick to take offense and defend himself when someone is opposing him and his views. This is made especially obvious during The Answer when the SEES groups is brought between the decision of starting from the past before the battle with Nyx, or moving forward onto April 1st. Yukari put down his opinion on leaving behind the past, and in turn, he snapped back at her.
Strengths:
Physical:
Being a boxer, Akihiko is not only athletic, but strong. He continually fights during the dark hour as well as train. At school he is the captain of the boxing team. He holds a lot of stamina to boot. This makes his endurance to take a hit apparent. Akihiko is more than able to carry his own weight in battle. His strike attacks gain him some advantage over certain enemies in Tartarus where pierce attacks fall short.
Also since he is a boxer, he is able to defend himself from some attacks. This prevents him from being completely vulnerable even if he isn’t on the offense in battle.
He can fight unarmed, Akihiko doesn’t need a weapon to defend himself or fight someone (or something.) Upon taking boxing as a method to fight he became highly specialized to the point where he became captain of the team at school. Despite being lanky in appearance, Akihiko packs a powerful punch. Aside from his training in school, he also trains in Tartarus.
Akihiko can also take his fair share of damage, and hold his own weight. Even when he is near exhaustion and winded, he still finds strength to continue fighting. At times to the point where he may even overexert himself because he gets a little careless.
His persona has an affinity for electricity, when he draws upon Caesar, Akihiko can make powerful lightning attacks to one or multiple foes. This also gives him a resistance to electric based attacks where it can either be blocked or perhaps even rejuvenate him.
Mental/Emotional:
Akihiko have undying determination to be better, and stronger. There’s little to de-motivate him from his goals. He prefers to face things head-on and fight for what he believes in. This is shown throughout all of the game. The first notable appearance is at the beginning when he wishes to fight, but due to serious injury he is unable to and force to sit it out until his wounds recovered. It’s very obvious that if he weren’t contained Akihiko would fight even with injuries. Throughout most of January he would ask if they could go to Tartarus so they could prepare for battle against Nyx.
He’ll even motivate others to do fight their hardest, and he is very encouraging. Akihiko will praise things to his party members like “Good Job!” He trusts his friends with his life and never hesitates to right by their side. A second notable benefactor to his drive is his will to help and protect his friends.
Weaknesses:
Physical:
As strong as his persona is, he still needs an to call upon it. Without it they might as well be hidden powers. This is mostly a disadvantage in fights with shadows. Without it his only method of fighting and defending is his boxing. To someone normal he stands a chance, but anything past supernatural and Akihiko doesn’t have many options to defend himself with.
He is vulnerable to distant attacks and enemies that have weapons. Akihiko has an arms-length attack whereas an enemy that can attack from afar doesn’t need to be close by to attack him. Meaning he is unable to strike back if they aren’t within his reach.
Also just like any other human, it takes time for him to heal. He doesn’t immediately recover, and it often takes weeks to months at a time depending on how serious the injury may be. While he can take a hit or two, Akihiko is capable of becoming rendered useless.
Akihiko has a strong weakness for ice attacks. Even the weaker skills are critical enough to know him off his feet. More than one hit and he becomes tired and exhausted. Also because he is weak to ice attacks, they also take off a lot more damage than other elemental attacks. He is notably weak to Mitsuru’s affinity and is perhaps why he is easy to become frightened of her and her execution.
Mental/Emotional:
It can be argued that his eagerness is a weakness, since he doesn’t spend much time thinking before acting when it comes to battle. Through strategic most of the time, he’s still willing to fight even when he’s injured. Akihiko is also susceptible to grief, and is plagued with doubt easily at times. He isn’t very assertive when it comes to expressing his vulnerable emotions and is often subtle about it. Although he is quick to express his anger which inadvertently is a weakness all in its own.
He’s a bit socially awkward when it comes to people outside of SEES. It doesn’t show him interacting sociably outside of SEES very often, and even then interacting with people in sees seems limited. Girls in general are his weakness. He doesn’t know how to properly respond to girls often. It becomes even harder for him when they have an attraction for him. He even gets annoyed when the long for him, to the point where he’ll complain to Minato about it. Eventually he’ll starting avoiding them like the plague if only to spare him the trouble.
Akihiko is blatantly single-minded, this is made obvious all throughout the game even with emotional development. While he does correct his intentions about becoming stronger, better, and more reliable, it doesn’t change the fact that he still desires it more than anything else.
Samples (ALL samples must be set in Luceti-verse.)
First Person:
W-what’s going on now? … Where is this? [Shuffling.] It doesn’t appear to be anywhere near Iwatodai, but I thought everything was already resolved.
And where are my clothes? This doesn’t make any sense. Don’t tell me all that work was for nothing! [Sigh.] It’s just one thing after another. I wonder if the others are here.
…!
It’s a journal?
What does this all mean? I’ve never seen anything like this. Heh, and that’s saying a lot.
This thing seems to be important. I guess I better take it with me, and if the others are here...maybe they’ll know what’s up.
Third Person:
When Akihiko left the dorm behind that morning, he thought he left all his problems there as well. His sudden awakening to Luceti gave him unsettled feelings and questions all his effort. Everything boiled down to coming to a closure, and when he finally got one he was tossed into another situation with no answers. It kind of angered him. He wasn’t the type to sit around and wait for answers to come to him. Akihiko left the spot where he awoke and started to search for something. Anything, but he was mostly to search for his friends. If there really was a third trouble brought about, he wanted to resolve that too with high hopes that everything would truly be normal.
“Does he know about this too?” Akihiko asked himself as he continued to travel. There were so many questions he had that he wanted answered. It was coincidentally after he just figured out the answer to something else, the answer to his death. The unnerving consequence made things very hard to swallow, and convinced him that maybe his friends where here too. Was this the price to learning the truth? Bear in mind that Akihiko no longer held any regrets about it, but he was getting tired of new problems rising.
He very clearly realized that this wasn’t home, and that his lack of clothes and understanding meant something happened. Akihiko was still unaware of his wings, and the bar code on his backside. “I don’t think I died, there would be no reason for that.” It was since he was ready to ride with the others with Aigis and Yukari being the last to come.
The fact that this wasn’t Iwatodai, both Tartarus and The Abyss of Time were eradicated, and there was that seemingly happy ending. It did eliminate a lot of possibilities. It couldn’t have possibly be related to that. Meaning there was a new problem, or resolve altogether, and that’s what he needed to find out. “Hey guys! If you’re out there, can you hear me?” He asked thinking that perhaps they got split up. Whatever it was that happened. Akihiko called out a few more times before he gave up. “I guess they aren’t here.” This depressed him a little. “There’s only one way to figure this out, and that’s to face it head-on. Heh. Just like before.” Was it his journey to travel alone? He was about to find out.
