The Case of the Missing Housemate, Take Two

Jul 13, 2010 05:58

I recently (a month ago, whatever) moved out of the house I had been renting with some friends. Some of you guys know the one - the one that one of the housemates disappeared from without a word. Apparently, that room is cursed.

We found a replacement shortly after the girl vanished. The replacement was supposed to be the one to move in in the first place, but was unable to confirm he was moving in before we signed the lease, so it went to bitch-mate. Who happened to be his ex-girlfriend. Anyway, so she left and he moved in and everything was awesome. Right up until the last month of us being there.

See, I'm looking to move to Chicago after I graduate, which is the end of this school year. Max, my roommate, was only down here for the year while her husband was in Iraq. Anthony and Jason were the ones who were staying, and Jason was the one who offered to sign the new lease. So, I got him in touch with the landlord and a tenant application. Then he disappeared. Stopped taking phone calls, text messages, showing up at rehearsals...

The last time I saw him was on a Saturday about a month and a half ago. Max and I were heading out to Austin for the day, though, so I only saw him that morning to remind him about the tenant application. After that, nothing. Anthony almost lost a place to live because of Jason.

Anyway, he stopped showing up at rehearsals for shows he was stage managing (including the one we're doing now) and doesn't come to APO meetings or events. Anthony has taken to making sure to lock the doors at all times at the house, as Jason never made himself copies of the keys. If he needs to get in, he has to call and talk to Anthony.

According to one person, they did manage to get in touch with him briefly and ask about where he's been. Apparently, he's been working and hasn't come to rehearsal because it "doesn't pay the bills."

I get that working for money to pay bills is important, but clearly he's doing something wrong. If he is still coming to school next semester and I ask about it, I'm almost certain he's going to pull some "holier-than-thou" living on his own crap.

Which, hello, was what this entire past year has been about for me. I'm planning on moving to Chicago and I needed to know that I could do it on my own. My schedule was plenty cramped, but I managed everything.

Even if he was having problems, though, he almost cost Anthony a place to live and my reputation for future landlords. The least he could have done was let us know something was going on and he wasn't able to sign the lease.

Rereading the Harry Potter series.

Goblet of Fire, chapter one, Voldemort to Wormtail:

"...[a task] that many of my followers would give their right hands to perform..."

I see what you did there, Voldy.
