Title: Slip and Slide
Fandom: Homestuck/A:TLA
Rating: T
Pairing: Dave/Jade if you squint
Summery: Dave visits Omashu for the first time to find a friend expecting his arrival. Mail-slide shenanigans ensue.
Getting into Omashu isn't really much of an issue for him; he's just a pretty cool traveling Firebender-swordsman headed into the city so he doesn't have to sleep on the ground again. And he's got a friend here. Why not grace the cool lady with some Strider swag.
Omashu towers into the sky, and there are crisscrossing slides traveling high up the slopes and leading down to where he was entering the city. The first train of thought that enters his mind is that he probably outta have asked his friend where she lives and if she could provide a place to stay for the night.
His second thought is 'why is that girl running towards me?' as he heads up into the city.
His third thought is 'how the hell does she know my name?' as it is called out enthusiastically before he's plowed into and has time to brace for impact.
He recalls letters written to him somewhat sloppily and with artistic little additions between the words, about this city and the kingdom and about cloud formations. He knows right away who this is.
She's gushing happily like a severed artery and giving his body no regards for air and something metal is jabbing into his neck. How the hell does she have such an iron grip around him and how in the world did she know he was gonna show up today? And she's laughing and giggled and just bubbling about how great it was to finally meet him.
Somehow he's able to free himself from her grip, pulling back to get a good long look at her. Waves of black curls cascade down her back, framing a pair of dorky glasses and grass-green eyes and a pair of buck teeth that seem to nibble on her lower lip as she takes him in. She speaks first, never breaking that silly grin of hers.
"You're taller than I thought you'd be."
"What'd you expect? Come on, Harley, you know me better than that." He answers, to which she just giggles at, her already wide smile impossibly growing bigger and she grabs his hand unexpectedly.
"I'll give you the tour! Oh, but are you hungry, we can stop somewhere to eat. Do you wanna' eat now or later cause there's lots to see in Omashu-"
"Nah, I had breakfast this morning: ice cold fish from a stream roasted by my sick fires."
"Coool!"
She never let's go of his hand as they travel the city, and he somehow manages to pay attention to her babbling on about the history of Omashu and where she would go play with other little kids when she had some spare time and her favorite shops. Before he knows it they've traveled up, up and up towards the top of the city.
"Oh hey, Dave!" She suddenly cuts herself off in the middle of her rather animated description of the story of The Cave of Two Lovers. "Do you wanna go slide on the mail chutes?"
"The what?"
The hand that's not gripping his own tightly suddenly points to the top of one of those long slides that spiral and wind between houses and streets down to the bottom of the city, probably at least a thousand feet away.
For a second he thinks she's joking.
Then he see's her moving her body lithely, moving her arms expertly and pulling a kart big enough for both of them from where they're kept.
"Come on, Dave, let's go!"
"No." he answers immediately, and she frowns.
"Aw, why not?"
"I'm too royally cool for such a thing."
Her frown is wiped off her face and she laughs, before looking at him with pleading eyes.
"Please Dave, it's a lot of fun and perfectly safe!"
"No!"
Two minutes later he's seated in the front of the cart and wondering how the hell she won that argument, all the while staring down the steep chute. Jade's eagerly seating herself behind him, wrapping her arms tightly around his waist and preparing to earthbend them down there.
"OK, hold on tight Dave!" She tells him before moving her arms. The cart budges.
"Wait, what am I suppose to hold ontAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!"
Adrenaline like he's never known before shoots through his veins as buildings and other chutes fly past his line of darkened vision and Jade's laughter is echoing in his ears over the wind somehow.
He manages to stop yelling after the initial shock fades somewhat, more focused on tightening his hands on the sides of the cart and praying that his shades don't go flying off. Her whoops and giggling don't disappear.
Then it suddenly stops.
At the same time their chute merges with another a large delivery of what Dave can tell are some pretty sharp weapons suddenly come up from behind them. He turns around to get a better look.
It's that moment he notices that Jade's grip on his waist had slackened, and her face was pressing into his back. And her breathing was pretty even for someone who'd been yelling not two moments earlier.
"Oh, what the fuck Harley, seriously!?" He manages to get out before returning his line of vision back to the other cart, which is approaching at an alarmingly fast rate. Out of the corner of his eye he see's another split off just ahead of them.
Managing to manipulate his arms and body from Jade's hold and finding his center of balance he sends fire shooting from his fist, bright and powerful and licking the sides of the stone chute and sending the other cart down the other side of the fork while theirs heads down the first. Jade's left sitting up and somehow still asleep.
Dave allows himself a second of relief before realizing that the end of the line was growing bigger by the second. He turns back around again and attempts to shake Jade awake.
"Come on, Harley, wake up already!" She suddenly snorts, eyes blinking open. He doesn't have to say anything before she's moving again, slowing them down and easily manipulating the stone that their sitting in to come to a complete stop at the end of the chute.
She smiles at him, and takes his hand again as he makes an attempt to make shakily stepping out of the cart look cool. Somehow she's aware of the stiffness in the tendons and the warmth left over from firebending, and just shoots him a reassuring grin. Somehow he trusts it.
"See? Perfectly safe."
Safe. Yeah. He might as well head to the swamps and wrestle cat gators right now cause there's a more likely chance he'd survive that than another trip down those death traps.
"Wanna go again sometime?"
She's going to be the death of him.
