The nights are clear and she had never known so many stars in her life. They twinkle and shine and shed their faint lights on them both. And are probably the most beautiful thing she’s ever seen. Without the ever watchful gaze of the moon, on this night, there are more of them than ever.
Warm summer night air prevents the need for a fire, and that is why they are more than willing to camp out on the hillside that overlooked another forest. They seem endless, but each mile and each day brought something new.
Ico pops a few berries that they had gathered into his mouth and says something, and as always, she never knows what his is saying. In any case, she doesn’t pay much attention to what he’s talking about, for her eyes are on the millions of lights above.
And when the faintest streak of light flashes by her eyes, high above them, Yorda starts. She thinks for the most fleeting moment that her vision is playing tricks on her, but Ico’s noise of happiness makes her glance over, and he points excitedly at the sky.
Yorda returns her gaze upwards, and she wonders what it was. They wait in eager silence until another, much brighter but subtle flash passes over them in the blink of an eye. She sucks in a sharp gasp, and Ico chuckles.
She wonders what they are. Are they perhaps stars that have at last died and then fall to earth? Will one land near them? The girl does not know, and curiousity burns bright, but she is content to lay on the grassy ground beside her heart-companion and wait for more.
Their hands are linked, as always, and always will be. His palm is warm in hers and she squeezes it when the sky gods look down upon them and send a plethora of stars to rain from the heavens above them.
And the pair of mismatched companions watch until sleep takes them both to sweet, blissful dreams.
