I agree with you. I can count in my head, but a lot of times if I'm considering other factors as I'm counting, I still use my fingers. The way I see it is that it's part of individual learning style. I am largely a visual and kinesthetic learner, so using my fingers (or dots, or checkmarks, or what-have-you) helps because it's something that I can see. I do the same thing when I'm listing things. Sometimes I'll tap my fingers on my desk, or I'll count on my fingers out loud because I'm including other information with those numbers, ex. "when I get home from work, 1. laundry, 2. clean off my desk - file papers, put books away, 3. dishes - remember to handwash coffee cup", etc. From a pedagogical point of view, I see this as a perfectly fine thing to do.
