Ilana is a girl when she sees her first ghost.
Digging at the earth is a favorite past time of hers. There were people here, a long time ago, who built huts and made arrows, Jacob tells her. She hopes to find pieces of them, but all that's left in the ground is bones.
But she isn't afraid. The dead don't worry her. It's the living who do.
You're a clever girl, Isabella says. She is oddly solid to the eyes, but her touch is like bathing in ice water. Such a pretty girl, too.
The dead don't threaten her, they fawn over her.
Jacob's girl, they all agree. She collects them, almost. Ghosts and memories of people who could never leave. Some are so old, she wonders if they were here even before Jacob. Some are flickering, heading away and to some high plane. Ilana isn't ignorant enough to ask them where they're going. In due time, she thinks, we all find out where.
You can't talk to them, Jacob chides. You can't see them. Furious, Ilana lashes out, breaking a jar in the statue, water spilling onto the floor. He says nothing else, just watches the dirt hungrily soak what she's spilled, waiting for her anger to subside.
But he's wrong. For the first time, he's wrong. And her perfect image of him, as all perfect images eventually do, shatters.
Ilana runs for the jungle before anything else happens.
A brave girl, Isabella calls her. To be in the dark when he's around. Ilana doesn't know who he is. She doesn't know what she means.
All of this, she knows, is just a very bad dream. And in the morning, it will all be over.
We'll protect you, they say.
That night, Ilana puts her faith in the dead and wakes up unscathed. It is the first time. But it won't be the last.
