Mud

The two of them managed to separate from the rest. It wasn’t the first time they’d wound up alone together on accident. They’d been doing that a lot lately. This time, they were going down to the creek to literally test the water (as in for microbes, bacteria, and other things).
“Oh, look at that,” Chloe said lightly. “It’s raining.”
“So it is,” Rush replied. “You can turn back, if you want.”
“And miss out on all of this exciting science? Hell no,” she said with a laugh; he smiled in response.
“You really didn’t have to come in the first place.”
“I want to be useful. And I like the rain.”
There was an awkward silence.
“I won’t lie -- I like the company.”
She looked up at him as they climbed the hill and smiled to herself.
They didn’t get very far up that hill, though -- or at least Chloe didn’t. She lost her footing and slid into a muddy puddle. Rush looked on in horror and hurried down the hill only to find her laughing. She was covered in mud and rain and she was laughing. He couldn’t help but smile.
“Here,” he extended his hand. “I’ll help you.”
She grabbed his hand and pulled him down with her. She laughed even harder. He sat up abruptly. Like her, he was now covered in wet, muddy filth.
“You’re wicked,” he said it like he meant it, but he was smiling anyway.
“Are you going to punish me?” she asked; really, she was daring him.
Both of their expressions suddenly grew very serious.
“No,” he said softly, wiping the mud off of her face.
They seemed to be locked in each other’s gaze. He held her chin in his hand. And then it happened: they both leaned into each other. The kiss was soft and careful. It was hard to tell whether it was a first or not, because there was a lot of underlying tension in the air.
They each pulled away just as the kiss intensified, as though they’d just become aware of what they’d done.
“We should get back,” Rush said quietly, pulling Chloe to her feet. She nodded. And then went on their way as though what just happened never really did.
Eli sat dumbfounded, staring at the kino footage. All he’d wanted to do was be lazy and explore the woods remotely. He didn’t want to see that. But now that he had, he didn’t think he could ever get it out of his mind. There was something there between them in the mud.
