Chloe stood in the empty observation deck. They were stationary, and she could see a beautiful star; its light bathed the entire deck in an intoxicating red glow. This was what it was all about, Chloe thought. The exploration. The beauty. As long as they were stuck on that ship, they had to make the best of it. And she couldn’t think of a place she’d rather be than right there and right then.
And she wasn’t the only one who had that idea; Rush did too.
“Care for some company?” he asked.
She smiled.
“Of course.”
He stood beside her; they both gazed out the window in silence. But she couldn’t help glancing at him occasionally; his handsome profile was lit perfectly by the star’s light.
“I wish it could always be like this,” she said, breaking the silence. “I wish it could always be this beautiful, this peaceful.”
“If it were,” he reasoned, “we wouldn’t appreciate this beauty and peace half as much, would we?”
“Clever and wise,” Chloe said, smiling. “Is there anything you aren’t, Dr. Rush?”
He laughed, looking down; she thought she saw a hint of flush in his cheeks.
“I think you only see the good in people, Chloe.”
He grew a bit more serious when he said that. But that didn’t deter her.
“Is that wrong?” she asked.
“No,” he said quietly shaking his head. “No, it’s not.”
“Well, I think you are a good man. We’d all be dead if it wasn’t for you.”
“How do you know I wasn’t just looking out for number one?”
“You put me ahead of yourself when you saved me from the aliens,” she said. “You like people to think you don’t care, but you do. I can see it in your eyes.”
He smiled, looking ahead at the star.
“Well, I hope I still have the bluff on the others, then.”
Chloe laughed. “Eli’s still terrified of you. So are Brody and Volker. And you made Dr. Park cry yesterday. I think you’re good.”
They stood there in silence for a few moments. Chloe felt happy. And she knew Rush was too.
