Chloe watched with interest as Greer’s visage visibly changed. He wasn’t Greer anymore. Suddenly, he looked uncomfortable in his own body. He shivered a little and said flatly, “This is never going to feel normal.”
“Dr. McKay?” Young asked.
The man using Greer’s body nodded in the affirmative.
“Miss Armstrong will take you to Dr. Rush’s lab,” Young said; he left the room, and Scott followed at his heels like a trained puppy.
“I’m so tall,” McKay said, nervously attempting initiate some sort of rapport with Chloe.
Chloe didn’t know what to say to that.
“It takes awhile to adjust -- I was told your crew were the ones who rediscovered the stones in the first place.”
“My -- Dr. Keller -- she was the first to use it,” he said quickly. And then he added abruptly, “I’ve always wanted to study them more. Nobody’s exactly sure how they work, and I find the lack of curiosity unfathomable.”
Chloe walked and McKay followed her. She only knew him by reputation. They said he was a genius; his social skills certainly fit the pattern.
“I have to warn you Dr. Rush is in a bad mood,” she said, waving her hand in front of his lab’s door’s sensor.
They arrived just as Rush threw a notebook at Eli’s head; somehow, Eli managed to move in such a way that the book ended up hitting his shoulder instead.
“OW!” he said in an exaggerated way, more to prove a point than to show legitimate injury.
“It’s ALL WRONG,” Rush spat manically. “Do it again.”
“I’m not going to listen to you if you treat me like this,” Eli said.
“Then we’ll all die. Is that what you want? You want us all to die? Because I’m fine with that. At this point, death would be a welcome respite from your intense stupidity.”
“Dr. Rush,” Chloe said loudly, interrupting his passionate tirade. “This is Dr. Rodney McKay. He’s here to assist you.”
Both men seemed to be offended by that introduction.
“I’m sorry you’ve traveled across the universe for naught, Dr. McKay,” Rush said proudly, “But the situation is under control.”
“Au contraire,” McKay said, picking up the notebook that hit Eli. “The math is shoddy at best. And this theorem -- what is this? It’s nonsensical.”
“It’s an attempt to slingshot around a black hole,” Rush replied sharply. “Once we fine tune the calculations and calibrations, we’re golden.”
“This is why I’ve been called into help,” McKay said. “I have a knack for sorting out these kind of situations.”
“Christ,” Rush said, looking to Chloe. “What has possessed Young to send me some sort of egotistical prick to tell me how to do my job?”
“Dr. McKay has an…interesting track record,” Chloe said. “Apparently he’s come highly recommended by Colonel Carter.”
“I’d prefer Colonel Carter herself,” Rush replied with a snort, ripping the notebook out of McKay’s hand.
“Would you?” Chloe asked, attempting to sound casual. She failed miserably and Rush didn’t respond directly.
“Dr. Rush, perhaps it would interest you to know that while you’ve been talking about me as though I’m not in the room, I’ve been fixing your math.”
“There’s nothing wrong with my mathematics.”
McKay shoved the notebook into Rush’s hands and Rush’s face turned a frightening shade of red. He took a deep breath before he spoke.
“So you did.”:
“Admit you need my help and maybe I’ll stay,” McKay said lightly.
“Dr. McKay,” Chloe pleaded. “Please don’t antagonize Dr. Rush. All hell will break loose.”
“He’s abusive,” Eli interjected.
“Am not,” Rush defended.
“The Scottish aren’t known for their professionalism,” McKay said smugly, knowing full and well that none of them knew his own best friend was Scottish.
“And the Canadians are known arseholes,” Rush replied.
And then, for some reason, these dorky scientist guys got it in their heads to fist fight. They actually launched at each other with fists raised. Chloe shrieked and jumped between them, pushing them apart. She should’ve known it was a bad idea to put two geniuses in the same room together. Men were prone to pissing contests by nature; two men who thought they were God’s gift to science would never get along. It could never be possible -- and maybe that was Young’s plan all along. Maybe he was looking for an excuse to throw Rush into the brig and knew McKay would be the sort of person Rush couldn’t resist throttling.
“I have an idea,” Chloe said quickly before they could say or do anything else. “Work on the problem separately. Whoever solves it first wins. Both of you like to win, so that should entice you. And the fact that we get to survive should only sweeten the deal. So, Eli, why don’t you download the data to your laptop and take Dr. McKay to the auxiliary lab, where the two of you can work on the problem there?”
“Those terms are agreeable,” McKay allowed.
Rush grunted, and Chloe knew it was a positive grunt.
“But you’re staying with me,” he said, pointing his finger at her aggressively. “I need an assistant.”
“Just don’t throw anything at me,” she said sternly as the other two left.
He laughed and buried his nose in his work once more; she looked away from him to hide her own smile.
