Chloe paced back and forth in the corridor. She knew she looked like a crazy person, but she didn’t care. There was a lot on her mind; somehow, pacing brought it to the surface. Her thoughts grew frantic and erratic, but at least they were somewhat coherent. She knew what she had to do.
“Eli, will you get out?” she said as she entered the lion’s den (for it really was the lion’s den -- it had that vibe about it particularly in that moment).
Eli quirked his eyebrow; he was confused, but he was also relieved to be told to go away. He didn’t want to be in there any longer. The level of stress was a bit much and he just really wanted a nap.
Chloe waited until he left to speak.
“I’m worried about you,” she said.
“I can’t imagine why,” Rush said quietly; he was determined not to look at her. Not today.
“You haven’t eaten for one thing.”
“I’m not hungry.”
“You haven’t slept for another.”
“Don’t need it.”
“You’ve been running Eli ragged.”
“I do most days.”
“But the thing I find most peculiar,” she said finally finding her ground, “is the fact that you’re totally evading the issue. That is very unlike you. If you knew I was wrong -- and I mean really wrong -- you would have no problem in letting me know it.”
She had him there. He was good at letting people know they were wrong when they were. And she wasn’t wrong -- she was right. And in that respect, he decided she deserved his admittance on the matter.
“It was her birthday today, Gloria’s,” he said; his voice grew soft as though he were remembering something from long ago. And then that tone changed very abruptly into one that was overly casual as he said, “There’s no harm in staying busy.”
“There is if you’re harming yourself,” she replied gently. She knew it could possibly push him over the edge, but he still needed to hear it. “I don’t think she would want that.”
If anyone else had presumed to know what Gloria would’ve wanted, Rush would’ve taken offense. But it wasn’t annoying or presumptuous coming from Chloe; it was her way, so delicate. She had a knack for knocking down his walls.
And so he allowed, though he spoke very quietly, “I suppose you’re right.”
