I picked up a new art technique this week. By "art technique" I mean I learned about two settings in Photoshop I'd never heard of in my life despite the fact that I A) went to art school and B) have used Photoshop for like eight years.
Yeah.
I don't explore much, see.
This "technique" has changed my life, I think. My asari picture from the other night was just a crappy quick sketch. Last night I sat down to do a real picture and decided to do some fanart.
My subject?
My favourite scientist salarian, Dr. Mordin Solus! :D
Few reasons. First of all, I know that I am quite capable of drawing elves if I want to. He is about as far from a blood elf as I could think of at the time. Secondly, he has fun markings and interesting gradation in his skin tone. Then he also has a lot of age spots and wrinkles for some fine details later that I'd like to experiment with without having them stick out too strangely.
So, I sat down at about midnight last night and threw some stuff down. This is where I ended up:
This morning I tackled it a bit more. There is a strong possibility that this may be the first picture I've ever done where I felt comfortable removing the lineart. :OOOO
That eye is filled with intense scientific scrutiny.. e_e
At least this colouring style is a bit less mind-numbing to watch, if I ever decide to let anyone stare at it in progress (whereas watching anyone clean up lineart meticulously for 8 solid hours makes you want to kill yourself). Also! It goes faster! At least the transition from sketch to a-little-less-obviously-a-sketch is concerned.
