Sometimes when I can't get a clear picture of a character in my head, I sit down and draw it. In designing my new werewolf character, I needed to get his transformed state down. Werewolves come in different shapes and sizes, of course, and his particular experience with lycanthropy would depend on all of that good stuff.
My preference for my werewolves tend to lean heavily on my history with anthropormorphic animal artwork, and so that's the direction I went with. I adjusted a bit because I didn't want it to.. work as well, you could say. This is not his natural form like it was for them. So rather than having him stand tall and straight, even my default pose here seemed to read better hunched. Thin, wiry and very leggy were my key words. A small head because real wolves have rather small heads compared to the rest of them (particularly if you're thinking about standing them up on two legs). I also wanted the hand/paws to be somewhat functional as hands, but with far less dexterity. Big-ass claws wouldn't help either. :3 I'm also a sucker for fluffy tails. Also fluffy ears..
Colour-wise I wanted to experiment with a reverse pattern. Generally creatures will have a darker dorsal side and a lighter ventral side, but with the silver/grey palette I wanted to use and the eye spots I was really worried about turning things into a husky.
I'm looking forward to shading the portrait shot and then maybe work on some roughs for action sketches. Having not drawn anything like this in.. too long I'm kind of excited about working with anthros again! :D
He also has a third form that would be a full wolf form, though larger than an actual wolf, but that was less important to design because.. derp. It looks like a wolf!
I left the WIP up.. just because. Sometimes it's fun to see progress (not really).
