Hyukjae decides that he hates people who don't make room for others the day he meets Cho Kyuhyun. It's not like Hyukjae has ever liked them, or that Kyuhyun is any different from the people he's known before - but there's something about Kyuhyun that sets him off, that makes a grimace come to his face at the mere thought.
Kyuhyun doesn't know this, of course. In fact, he comes over to Hyukjae with the bright, beaming smile that he sends the rest of his classmates.
"Hi," he says with a twitch of his lips; a smirk, Hyukjae notes, and it makes him demean the other boy even further. "I'm Kyuhyun."
"Hyukjae," Hyukjae replies.
When their fingers brush and their hands meet for a dignified handshake, Hyukjae can't help but notice that Kyuhyun's fingers are long and slender, like a sharpened pencil.
--
He discovers that Kyuhyun is a lot younger than he had thought - that is, the same year as he is - and also that Kyuhyun doesn't make room for anyone. He doesn't make room for anyone.
Except for Hyukjae.
"I don't like your friends," Kyuhyun tells him one day as they walk out on the school courtyard - they're skipping class, but it had been Kyuhyun's idea anyways because Hyukjae doesn't skip class - along the dirty blacktops. "They're foolish, without half a mind to what they're saying."
"You can't say that," Hyukjae argues, turning to him defiantly, black hair whipping in the wind. "They're my friends, I care about them--"
"Yeah, but that doesn't mean they're foolish, right?" Kyuhyun faces him, grinning, hands still shoved into his sweatshirt pockets; Hyukjae notices that his eyes are black, glittery.
Hyukjae stops and stares at him. "What about me, then?" he asks. "Do you think I'm foolish?"
When Kyuhyun laughs, it's a full out laugh, nothing held back or anything. "You're all right," he tells Hyukjae, and Hyukjae wonders what this means.
--
Maybe one day he'll abandon him, Hyukjae thinks. Maybe one day he'll run away and go out into the world and show Kyuhyun that life is not about power, about intelligence, about-- about anything Kyuhyun thinks it is, but that it's about love and caring about others and letting yourself go, being free.
Not today though, he thinks as they skip class again and run along the streets.
"Where are we going?" Hyukjae shouts over the gust of the wind and the honking of the cars.
Ahead of him, Kyuhyun turns around and laughs. His laugh is carefree, almost delightful. "To a place where no one can find us!" he yells back.
They end up turning the corner and Hyukjae realizes that Kyuhyun has no idea where the hell he's going: so he decides to improvise. He turns a sharp corner suddenly; it takes Kyuhyun all but two seconds to realize that he's not following. "Hey, Hyukjae!" he calls, but Hyukjae doesn't listen-- instead he runs, runs, and runs.
Eventually he stops in an alley to rest, sliding down against the wall and panting on the dirty ground. Kyuhyun appears beside him and is suddenly sitting next to him. Hyukjae turns and gives him a look.
"Hey, I was here first!" he says, giving Kyuhyun a light shove.
Kyuhyun laughs. "What, you can't share?" He pants as well, his chest heaving in and out. Hyukjae watches with some sort of fascination, some sort of intrigue.
It sparks further when Kyuhyun moves and leans his head on Hyukjae's shoulder, but Hyukjae thinks nothing of it.
--
They continue on in school as foolish teenagers, even though Hyukjae works day and night and gets the grades he deserves. Kyuhyun doesn't care at all and barely manages to pass, though Hyukjae knows he can do so much better.
"You're not living up to your potential," Hyukjae tells him one day, as bluntly as he can. It's the nice thing to do, he knows: let others know what they should.
But Kyuhyun just smirks that smirk of his and brushes it off with a, "What potential are you talking about? It's not potential if I can't use it, right?"
"Yeah, but..." Hyukjae blinks and stares at him. "You can use it."
"Not if I don't want to." Kyuhyun flicks his hair behind his ears; it's growing long now, and Hyukjae sees that it needs to be cut. Kyuhyun has grown a bit himself as well since he had started-- a little taller, a little prettier. But never a little wiser. "Have you ever thought about it, Hyukjae, if you're never going to want something, then why would you waste your time working towards it?"
"But you don't know if you don't want it, in the long run." Hyukjae doesn't even know what they're talking anymore. "Look at you, you're smart and brilliant and a complete natural--why let it go to waste?"
Kyuhyun smiles at him. "Because it's a waste to me."
--
Hyukjae thinks of his relationship with Kyuhyun as a competetive one, like they're both aiming for the same thing but only one of them will get it. Maybe it's the last piece of pie, or the first person to wash their hair, or the person who eats his lunch the fastest. It doesn't matter--they're always competing, always trying to psych each other out. Sometimes Hyukjae wins, other times Kyuhyun's the victor and Hyukjae loses--but it doesn't matter because they both end in smiles anyways.
As they shovel the snow in the driveway for Hyukjae's mother ("It's always cold in Seoul," Kyuhyun would complain. Hyukjae would open up his mouth to argue, but then he'd realize that Kyuhyun's right. Kyuhyun's always right), they both try to shovel the most snow--or maybe it's the least. Kyuhyun ends up looking more contempt, however, so Hyukjae decides that he's lost.
"What do you want to be when you grow up?" Hyukjae asks Kyuhyun: the future's always been a common topic between them.
Kyuhyun sighs and throws his shovel to the ground, to rest. He runs his fingers through his hair and sighs, thinking, while Hyukjae continues working at the snow.
"Happy," he replies--it's what he always replies. And Hyukjae crinkles his nose, as always.
"That's not an answer!" he says, words coming out of his mouth like he's practiced it. "I mean what do you want to do, for a job or a career, or--"
"I want to be happy," Kyuhyun says again.
Hyukjae throws his own shovel aside, before facing Kyuhyun, placing his hands on his hips. "You can't be happy for a living," he tells him. "You'll get no money from that, you won't get a house or a job or a car or anything just from being happy--"
"I want to be happy with whatever I do," Kyuhyun says, continuing to ignoring Hyukjae. "With whatever I live with, whatever I get. I want to be happy with you, Hyukjae." And he looks at him with stars in his eyes.
And this is Hyukjae's cue to pick up his shovel, turn around and give up on him.
--
Kyuhyun decides to get his hair cut when he's over at Hyukjae's house ("Be nice and play nice," his mother had told him, as if Kyuhyun ever plays nice at all. But of course, she doesn't know that) and they're fooling around in his room, just like teenage boys do. "Let's cut your hair," Hyukjae says eagerly, picking up a pair of scissors, and Kyuhyun agrees.
"Don't shave it all off," Kyuhyun says frightenedly, looking into the mirror. It's the first time he's ever sounded unsure; Hyukjae feels an odd delight in this.
"I'm not going to, don't worry," he assures him as he adjusts Kyuhyun's head. "There." He looks into the mirror. For the first time, he sees how beautiful he and Kyuhyun look together, thin lips and thin lips, high cheeks and high cheeks. He pauses for a second.
"Well what are you waiting for?" Kyuhyun says in the same tone, again. "Go on, cut it." As if he's scared it'll happen too quickly. It'll happen too slowly.
Hyukjae starts cutting his hair, first at the neck then around the bangs. Then he goes to the side, ignoring the small whimpering noises that Kyuhyun makes all the while. It's rather entertaining though. Hyukjae notices the way Kyuhyun winces every time he gets too close to his skin.
"Calm the fuck down or else I'm going to end up slicing your ear off," he says when Kyuhyun jumps again. Kyuhyun stays still this time, but remains having a pained expression on his face when the scissors come too close.
Hyukjae finishes-- then he pulls back and lets Kyuhyun see. "Well?" he asks, picking up the hairs on Kyuhyun's shoulder.
Kyuhyun looks at himself. "It's... better," he finally says.
Hyukjae pauses. Then he howls with laughter. "Better? It looks horrible!"
He laughs for a little longer. But when he's done, he realizes that Kyuhyun hasn't said anything. So he looks at it again.
It could be worse.
--
Hyukjae leaves school with a diploma in his hand and a scholarship in the other. However, he doesn't go far just so that he'll be near Kyuhyun. (It's not like he wants to, he thinks--he wants to get as far away as he can from the boy. But Kyuhyun needs him, and Hyukjae can't find it in his heartstrings to leave.)
Kyuhyun visits him. It's entirely voluntary, Hyukjae realizes, or maybe it's just out of habit because Kyuhyun's still skipping school. He tries to scold him and send him back, but Kyuhyun merely regards him with, "What, just because you're legal now you think you can tell me what to do?" So Hyukjae gives up on him.
On one of his visits, they're looking through an old high school yearbook and giggling at all the ugly girls when Hyukjae turns to Kyuhyun, only millimeters away and says to him, quietly, "I like you Kyuhyun." He doesn't even know why he's said it--perhaps it's something he's always wanted to say and never found the courage to. Perhaps it's something that had been bugging him in the back of his mind and finally got free. Perhaps it's something he's always known and never wanted to admit to himself.
Kyuhyun turns to him and smiles at him, dainty pink lips nearing towards his cheek. Hyukjae hesitates, suddenly scared.
"I know," Kyuhyun says.
Their breaths linger together, threatening, wanting to close.
--
Kyuhyun's kisses are lingering, brief, chaste and Hyukjae hates them because he always wants more, he wants more. Kyuhyun never kisses him for longer than ten seconds, though, or maybe time just passes too quickly for Hyukjae.
"You're a terrible kisses," Hyukjae laughs when they part again, and he finds that he's panting (maybe time does go by too quickly.) Kyuhyun laughs, cheeks pink from being out of breath, as he stares at Hyukjae.
"Why do you keep kissing me, then?" he asks him, a grin dancing on his lips. "Am I just that irresistible to you?"
Hyukjae hits him over the head. "You're an asshole," he tells him. "Shouldn't you be in school right now?"
"Shouldn't you be making out with me right now?" Kyuhyun teases back.
Hyukjae rolls his eyes, but doesn't pull back when Kyuhyun leans in for another kiss.
--
Hyukjae makes new friends, like Donghae and Sungmin, but he always forgets about them when Kyuhyun's around. And even when they call and ask if he wants to hang out with them on the days that Kyuhyun visits, he always answers no.
"What, do you just love being with me that much?" Kyuhyun asks, though Hyukjae can tell that there's something worried in his eyes.
"No, I just don't want you to come over for nothing," he replies.
"Well I can always go to school if you want."
"You don't have to--" Hyukaje stops suddenly and stares at Kyuhyun. "Wait, you would go to school? For me? Even though I've scolded you hundreds of times every day you skip and come visit me, you would still go--"
"Oh hush, don't get too full of yourself." Kyuhyun waves his hand. "I was just joking."
Hyukjae frowns. "That wasn't a very nice joke," he tells him. "Really, Kyuhyun, just because--just because you can do anything you want doesn't mean you should."
"Yeah, yeah." Kyuhyun leans over and kisses him on the cheek, then on the mouth, shutting him up.
--
Kyuhyun leaves school a few years afterward and ends up going to Hyukjae's university ("How did you get in here?" Hyukjae asks with surprise, and Kyuhyun just shrugs and replies with a smile and, "I have a few tricks up my sleeve.) They don't room together but they always visit each other, and Hyukjae finds something thrilling about their relationship.
They never say anything about it, though; Hyukjae's found that people have come up to him in the hallway and have asked him. He and Kyuhyun never hold hands, never hug, never snuggle together, never say, "I love you."
Hyukjae likes it, though. He does like it, a lot.
He's so tempted to ask Kyuhyun if they're together, though, when Kyuhyun wanders in his room and visits him (skipping class again, Hyukjae thinks, because he does it all the time, no matter where he is) and they end up flipping on the television and laughing at whatever show is on.
He turns to look at Kyuhyun and sees that he's beautiful in the dark, in the glow of the television screen, with his pointed nose and pencil lips and everything. Hyukjae opens up his mouth to speak; it's hard to find the right words for Kyuhyun. It's always been hard.
Kyuhyun laughs at something, and Hyukjae hears that it's wonderful. He sees that everything Kyuhyun does, everything that he is, is perfect. And so he doesn't say anything, because he knows he doesn't have to.
--
"I don't think," Kyuhyun murmurs as he pushes Hyukjae into the bed behind him, "that it'd be very appropriate to fuck in your roommate's bed."
Hyukjae pulls back and smirks at Kyuhyun, seemingly surprised. "Since when do you care what's appropriate?" he asks him, before moaning a little when Kyuhyun's touches go farther downward, to his more sensitive areas.
Kyuhyun chuckles as his fingertips dance along his skin. "True," he replies, pressing his cold hand against his warm body. Then he looks up into Hyukjae's eyes. "I bet that I can come faster than you."
Hyukjae grins.
"You're on."
--
Of course, Hyukjae gets out of university before him but he waits for Kyuhyun, even as he progresses. Kyuhyun joins him, much to his surprise. Then again, Hyukjae never knows what to expect of Kyuhyun.
They remain like this, like they've always been, with maybe a few more touches and a few less conversations (but not much changes, not much has changed. And they always go to places they're not allowed to go to, explore areas they've never been to before. And every day, it's different - because it's always different with Kyuhyun.
"What do you think about marriage?" Hyukjae asks Kyuhyun one day far after they've left high school. Kyuhyun's standing next to him, maybe reading a book, maybe playing another computer game, maybe listening to music. Hyukjae doesn't pay attention. He's never paid attention.
"What about it?" Kyuhyun snorts. "I think it's stupid. That you need to get it verified that you're in love. You don't need to let the whole world know, as long as you do." He doesn't look at Hyukjae as he says this, but the way his eyes shine while the words come out of his mouth tells him enough.
Hyukjae smiles, then leans over and pecks Kyuhyun on the lips. "And you know?" he asks.
Kyuhyun nods, smiling back. "I do," he says. He takes Hyukjae's hands in his own and holds him, ready for them to take on the world.
