A part of my found family in Winnipeg, Doug Shewfelt, passed away on February 10 of a heart attack. I went to the memorial service on Friday. It was held at St Andrew's United Church in Manitou MB.a small town about 2 or so hours drive from Winnipeg. So many people came to this funeral that the little church in Manitou was filled to the brim. Doug touched so many people's lives through the charity work he did, the RR group (a theater watching group), the near and far fanish communities, the gaming communities, his work, his family and his found family. He had many who flew or drove from all over the States and Canada. All came to celebrate for a short time the memory of a friend.
At the memorial service his brother, Grant, and Elizabeth Clement gave heartfelt eulogies. Dave Clement sang two songs to that were Doug's favorites (Field behind the Plow and Witch of the Westmoreland). After the service, the church provided sandwiches and sweets. This gave the rest of us time to hug and share and cry, but most of all remember the life of a friend and loved one now gone.
To me Doug will be conspicuous in his absence. He was a part of so much that he was there for me as much in the background as in the foreground. I will miss seeing him in the kitchen with Elizabeth where they whipped up party food together and held court. I will miss his conspiratorial grins as he plotted to make "something" happen. I will miss his enthusiasm for setting up camp at the Folk Festival. I will miss his sideways sense of humor. Most of all I will miss his presence. Rest in Peace Doug.
