Background: Dinah von Doom was born in Eastern Europe. Papa was a scientist, particularly specializing in security systems and law-enforcement equipment. Mama was an herbalist, both an expert flower-arranger and mystical dilettante. Dinah was just plain brilliant, digging into anything she could learn from a very early age. After Mr. von Doom died -- it wasn't a terribly safe place to live, then -- that included hands-on methods of protecting herself and others. Dinah was studying abroad in the States when, just shy of twenty and about to move on to the doctoral program, she met Lawrence Valerian, a rookie Philligan cop, when they both volunteered to help teach the campus self-defense classes. They....got a lot of practice over the following year, and ...things happened. Dinah didn't consider the sudden pregnancy a mistake: it wasnt' a word she tended to using. She and Lawrence had started talking about the wedding when Lawrence was killed on duty by Reed Carmichael, not yet called Mr. Thinker. Philligan wasn't a very safe place then either. Or, in some circumstances, a very just one: despite eyewitnesses, the bastard got off, and Dinah, essentially, swore undying hatred. She would track Carmichael's movements and criminal (and super-criminal) developments for the rest of their lives.
First, though, she went back to the Old Country. And over the next few years, her home became a safer place to be, thanks to the angry and determined woman in gilt- and-circuit-laden armor stalking about at twilight. When her mother succumbed to a mysterious illness and little Dinah Christine, all she had left, was old enough to travel reasonably, the all-too-small family began making return trips to Philligan to visit old connections -- she would eventually become good friends with Barbara MacGargan and Helen Marko -- and monitor Carmichael's activities better.
Over the years, Dinah established herself as The Iron Nightingale: brilliant technologist, expert martial artist, minor magical scholar, and Extremely Involved Parent. Dinah Christine is all she has, and she WILL be equipped to perfectly carry on in Mother's footsteps. Even if she has to download that readiness direclty into Dinah Christine's mind with her ingenious Ouroboros Codes.
Dinah also has had some longstanding and complicated interactions with a certain Alsatian 'Archduke'. They are not at the moment on speaking terms, but her unending ire is reserved for only one person, so that will change.
