At my job we have a "fish philosophy"
Every place you go "behind the scenes" of my work you see fish, if you look at our desks you see stuffed animal fish.
I never understood that whole "fish" thing until today, we had a business department meeting today at work, all the other girls from the offices came over to eat lunch chit chat solve problems and hear about the "Fish Philosophy"
Going in there in front of all those people to introduce myself made me nerves. I have fought with a couple of them before over insurance issues "THIS IS A HMO WE DO NOT ACCEPT HMOS....HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO TELL YOU THIS" Is something I have spat into the phone more times then I would have liked.

The truth is, I have been going through life waiting for the next big thing, always waiting for "pay day" or the weekend to come, watching the clock at my desk while doing paperwork. I wasn't happy. Sure, I was happy when I got paid or when it was 5 on a Friday but when it was 8 am and I am sipping coffee talking to a adjuster on somebody's workman's comp complaint, or have a 20 minute match with a irate patient about their deduct able, I WAS MISRABLE.

I have been reflecting a lot on all the things I have accomplished, Here I am 21 and with a good job, not just in the sense of money but I have great benefits and I work with some really amazing people. I am proud of my desk my phone my computer my own email....those small things make me realize where I was just 6 months ago.

I stopped doing things for the acceptance of other people or to throw it in somebody's face, I do not care.
I am making me happy.
I am getting up everyday and doing a job, I am damn good at.

Notice all those things say "I" that is right, I did them.

Does it bother me that I don't have a house or a apartment of my own or a new coach bag?

No, cause what I do, I have earned it on my own.

Tomorrow I will go to work, and "I will pick my attitude"

I WILL have a good day tomorrow.

I earned my stuffed animal fish.

Everybody needs to read this book and watch the movie. It will change you.

SOME REVIEWS ON THE FISH! BOOK.

Here's another management parable that draws its lesson from an unlikely source--this time it's the fun-loving fishmongers at Seattle's Pike Place Market. In Fish! the heroine, Mary Jane Ramirez, recently widowed and mother of two, is asked to engineer a turnaround of her company's troubled operations department, a group that authors Stephen Lundin, Harry Paul, and John Christensen describe as a "toxic energy dump." Most reasonable heads would cut their losses and move on. Why bother with this bunch of losers? But the authors don't make it so easy for Mary Jane. Instead, she's left to sort out this mess with the help of head fishmonger Lonnie. Based on a best selling corporate education video, Fish! aims to help employees find their way to a fun and happy workplace. While some may find the story line and prescriptions--such as "Choose Your Attitude," "Make Their Day," and "Be Present"--downright corny, others will find a good dose of worthwhile motivational management techniques. If you loved Who Moved My Cheese? then you'll find much to like here. And don't worry about Mary Jane and kids. Fish! has a happy ending for everyone.

Do you work in a "toxic energy dump"? Do you or your employees seem stuck in the doldrums all the time? Well then, FISH! is for you. Mallory Kasdan enthusiastically and energetically reads this tale of a manager of a department in which everyone has lost ambition, energy, and helpfulness. Through Kasdan's passionate narration, we learn how the Pike Place Fish Market--with their secrets for success and improved attitude--helps the manager encourages her staff to be involved and conscientious about what they do. FISH's philosophy will help people in any business regain their energy and passion for their lives and work.
