Man, so the future is looming. Expect many posts of this nature in the coming year.
Paramedics
Toronto:
Humber College
Centennial College
Ottawa:
Gonq
Montreal:
John Abbott
Maritimes:
CNA (College of the North Atlantic)- Newfoundland
Maritime School of Paramedicine- Nova Scotia
Atlantic Paramedic Academy- New Brunswick
Holland College- PEI
BC:
JIBC (New westminster? anyone know anything about the town?)
So in Ontario, programs take two years. In the Maritimes they look like they take a year, Three in quebec and in BC it is 4 months (?!).
Masters
Queens, Kingston, ON:
MA in Religion and Modernity
Pros: close, cheap(er), higher chance of getting in
Cons: ...close, religion and modernity doesn't float my boat as much as the other two programs
Cardiff University, Cardiff, Wales
MA in Religion in Late Antiquity
Pros: OMG Cardiff!, Late antiquity? hells yes!
Cons: $18,000 tuition, probably won't take me
Edinburgh Univeristy, Edinburgh, Scotland
MSc (seriously) in Religious Studies
Pros: OMG Edinburgh!, Msc?! Flexible taught program
Cons: $20,000 tuition, probably will not take me
Paramedics vs. Masters
in terms of wanting to be an international aid worker
Paramedics
real, tangible skill set- I can fix people in an emergency (at least hold them over until real help comes), cheaper (by far), offers a real career or in-between-assignments career, I can literally save lives
Masters
furthering my knowledge and education- the opportunity to learn more in a field I am very interested in, the weight a master degree garners- insight and critical thinking about the conflict/situation itself, opens doors to many other careers, (i get to put MA at the end of my name!)
Basically, what I think I am going to do it apply to the three masters programs and maybe three or four colleges and see what i get accepted to. For all I know, next year I will be busking full time and volunteering with St. John Ambulance/Red Cross and not in school at all.
I know I keep saying this, but I have no idea where I will be next year. I have never been in this position before, even in grade 12 I knew I would still be in Ottawa. It isn't terrible or unpleasant, just different. It would be very nice if Duncan and I ended up close together next year, though i don't know how likely that is...
