Gummi Bears and the Kiss, by Lucas Bryant by Haven on Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at 12:49pm
We finished taping! So now I’m going to sit back and look at the past six months and ask myself "what the frak just happened?" Then I'm going to watch “Haven” over and over...which will fill me with even more questions, before going to camp out in Balfour's yard because I can't stand being away from him...ever.
Seriously though, this fall I have a little part in a movie called “The Vow” that finishes in October. I also have a whirlwind international tour to promote “Haven” coming up shortly as well. So by the time you read this i may be making a fool out of myself in my pig-French attempts at communication. Pig-French, it's a lost language. Finally, after all of this, I’m going to sit down and cross all my body-parts in hopes of receiving a pickup for season 2...in Balfour's yard.
I will be leaving for the overseas press tour next weekend. I anticipate mobs at the airports as well as cross-continental travel delays because the “Haven” crew is coming! I'm hopeful that we will be as well-received internationally as we have been in North America because I think we have a unique show that people will respond to regardless of where they are from and I can't wait to hear Nathan speak German or the Chief speak Spanish or Dukespeak...English.
Now that the first season has wrapped, I have a lot of great memories both in front of the camera as well as behind the scenes. One day we were shooting at the Grey Gull and I was on the upstairs balcony just being my generally unbelievable self when i noticed that Emily and Michelle (Audrey and Julia) were shooting directly below me. I peeked over the balcony and I saw that they were drinking martinis and having a girl-talk scene, and I thought "Wow, this is a perfect position to drop something small and funny right between them!"
Hmmm... I looked around and saw a bowl of Gummi Bears, so I grabbed a red one, and I dropped it over the edge. It landed right in Emily's martini and splashed everywhere. I was like “Oh SH>T!” The girls were not impressed, the whole table was soaked and needed to be reset, Gerry the sound guy had a mic planted on the table which he now had to re-wire. It was like a bad dream y'know? But now, it’s a fond memory, even though Emily still doesn't think it was funny. Yet!
In front of the camera, we have a great time as well cuz I'm such a narcissist (that should go without saying) but I especially have a lot of fond memories of shooting the season finale. Maybe it’s because it was only a week ago and it was such a great script. Trust me, there are really, really big scenes and events and reveals and I think everyone felt a bit emotional about finishing up this first season as well. The second-to-last day we shot some climactic scenes on the beach and it was 40 something degrees Celsius (which is like a million degrees Fahrenheit) so at lunch we all just walked straight into that beautiful electric blue Atlantic ocean...that was quite a day.
Speaking of big scenes, I’ve noticed that a lot of fans went crazy when they saw that Nathan felt Audrey’s kiss. Frankly, I think Nathan went a bit crazy after he felt that kiss too. Yeah, everyone was pretty excited about that development (me too) and I got messages from all my family and friends about it. What’s interesting is that the kiss was something that initially was in the pilot script, but was then taken out and moved to a later episode in order to give it more weight. I wasn't sure of that decision atfirst, but now that I've experienced it, I think it was definitely a smartmove. That way Nathan and Audrey got to develop their relationship slowly and become friends (which is something they both really needed)before throwing this curveball into the mix.
Over these next episodes you’re going to see Nathan struggle with thedecision of whether or not to tell Audrey that he can feel her touch. He will be asking himself, “What does this mean?” Well, Nathan has a pretty limited emotional vocabulary to begin with, so this stuff just ties him up in big dumb knots. There is also some great father/son relationship stuff coming up with the Chief in episode 11, some fun with Duke in episode 12 and then the finale in episode 13 will blow all minds on so many levels. Truly, mine is still blown. It will really leave you wanting - no NEEDING - more!
