TM #187: Which is the more exquisite sensation: revenge, relief, or vindication?

Vindication.

Lauren has dreamed of that moment for the last four years of her life. She's not sure exactly what shape it will take, how it would happen, or if it's even possible anymore, all things considered. A body of water is the worst place for a mystery to occur. All evidence, damning or vindicating, is immediately washed away when the body, living or dead, slips into the water. Boats, especially small ones, make some of the worst crime scenes. And amensia makes truth practically impossible without a lucid witness.

She knows in her heart that she could have never, would have never... She didn't.

It was an accident. It had to be. Hallie Lockwood's death was some strange, tragic accident that would make more sense, would have been obvious on land.

Still, she imagines the moment they all realize it was just that - an accident. Lauren didn't kill her best friend, and maybe even made a valiant attempt to save her. One that led to her own coma, her own near death. At the very least, she'd be proven innocent by fact and not default. And all who looked at her accusingly would turn apologetic. Not that she'd hear their apologies. It's too late for that now. She just needs that moment. When the world knows the truth she's carried all this time, locked somewhere deep in the folds of a memory she can't spark.

Proof.
